I believe that in the case of the emerald ash borer at least, this is OK. If the wood has the bark removed, it can't transport the borer.

"bull" or is there something to this?

It's because of the transport of bad bugs like the Ash Borer which kills trees. The Ash Borer totally destroyed the forest at the Warren Dunes State Park campground in Michigan last year. Really sad.

Plus it's the *law*. Take wood across the bridge into the Upper Peninsula and be prepared to pay a $10,000 fine. And the cops will stop you. Last time I was up there the cops had people lined up on US 2 handing out tickets and taking away the wood. And that's with billboards for a 100 miles before the bridge. Some people just don't listen...

A bundle of firewood at our state campground will cost you $6 a bundle. The only reason the volunteer team sells ours for $6 is because that is what the state charges for theirs and we are not allowed to sell ours under their price. Last year it was $5. But just so you know that when you buy the wood at Rocky Gap State Park from the Hosts (Volunteers) that the money is used at that park and not sent back into the system. We provide services and buy things for the park which they don't have the money to purchase in their budget. I have some maple trees in our yard that give me alot of large branchs that we use for fire wood. Frontier Town in OC has 2-3 places on the road before you enter the campground on Stephen Decatur Hwy that sells wood for $3 for 6 pieces. Pretty soon it might be cheaper to burn coal that wood.

New York State Parks strongly suggest that you do not bring in wood transported from other areas, but no laws or limitations so far. Since we camp mostly within a 100 mile radius, not a big deal, but if I was coming from further away I would buy local wood.

We took two huge tubs of wood to FT CG last year only to find out a burn ban was in place..we understood why but made for a lonely campsite.

NY just enacted a new law at the beginning of June stating that you cannot transport untreated wood more than 50 miles. We're in the Adirondacks and this was the buzz in our campground the past couple of weeks.

Here's a website that maybe of help Emerald Ash

It has moved in to the northern part of ILL and as with other states I wouldn't try to move wood from the affected areas.

I find it interesting by that map that the only county in WV to be affected has one of the highest rates of tourism in the state due to whitewater rafting (I grew up in that county). I highly doubt that this was caused by the transporting of firewood but rather by folks traveling from affected areas bringing the bug along on their vehicles. That is probably the way most areas are infected, not by moving a bit of firewood.

Here's a quote from a newspaper article.
"It's believed the ash borer - which is a half-inch, emerald green beetle as an adult but wreaks havoc as a wood munching larvae - came to the U.S. near Detroit in the late 1990's from China, arriving in wood pallets or packing crates."

Check with your Department of Natural resources. Here in MN they have a list of approved vendors to buy wood from. You just need to show them the receipt and you can bring the wood into state parks. I have found the vendors outside the park much cheaper. I just paid $35.00 for a full pick up truck of cut and split hardwood from a camp from trouble teens. They cut and split the wood by hand as punishment when they break the rules. And they are a DNR approved vendor.
