On our last trip we found our shower drain running slow. I checked all of the plumbing Operating and Maintenance manual, but didn't find any information on acceptable drain cleaners for the system

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of a safe way to clean slow drains in an RV without ill effects on the pipes and grey water tank?

Try putting water in the tub then using a plunger.

I have used Draino but I run my own risks. I wouldn't let it set in the holding tank but the trap is made out of the same stuff your household plumbing is. I waited the 15minutes then ran lots and lots of water through to flush it out.

Check for hair or other debris in the drain fixture in the tub. I have to clean ours pretty frequently. Yes, I'm going bald!!

Remove the screw that holds the strainer/metal plate w/holes plate onto the shower drain connection {probably the reason for slow draining}, clean the metal strainer, and pour a gallon of hot water into the drain. If that does not free-up the drain, use a flexible snake and clean the P trap and again pour a gallon of hot water into the drain. Good luck.

A good plumbing store has drain cleaner. It's not actually cleaner. It's emzines that eat everything organic. Perfectly safe on all pipes as the little emzines (bugs) eat the bad stuff, they multiply, eat more, and multiply and eat more until everything is gone and then they get flushed down the drain. High Rise apartments use this as do Cruise Ships. I've got some I use in the house. A tablespoon full down each drain with a cup of warm water and the little critters go live!

Go to a hardware or other store such as Wal Mart and get a plunger. Get the one that is under $5. They are environmentally friendly and do not harm rubber seals. What you pull out may not be very pretty but expect at least 10 years of use before you have to replace it. We have had to purchase two in 30 years of RV'ing.

I am assuming you can’t get to the P-trap? I just remove my traps once in a while and using a baby bottle brush I clean them and the pipes as far as the brush will reach.

I bought one of these because my wife's cat likes to lay in the sink which constantly backs up. Fortunately on our coaches the pipes aren't very long, especially the shower, this is soft enough and cheap enough to try before harsh chemicals. By the way since we dump in somone elses sewer, i.e. campgrounds or other dumpstaions stick with a product that says safe for septic tanks if you use chemicals.
sorry forgot the link the first time
