I am looking for a better way to utilize my truck bed when camping. I have a camper shell over the bed and that makes only the back few feet usable, and that is firewood. Thus the rest of the bed is wasted space. I have been looking at some slide outs for sale that are very nice, but am not going to spend $700 plus. Does anybody have plans/pictures of something they may have done? Really do not want to remove camper shell.

The slide beds are nice but they add a lot of weight to the back of your truck. I used to work for our local Emergency Medical Service and we had the slides in the back of our quick response trucks. In another truck we used a canopy that also had doors on the sides allowing access either from the rear or either side. By having access from the sides the entire bed was accessible. Maybe your canopy could have doors added to the sides.
We have a topper on a F-250 with an 8' bed. I keep an adjustable length boat hook in the back. I use it to reach things and pull them to where I can reach them. Maybe something like that will help you.
I saw, a long time ago, in a handyman mag. a guy built his own slide out for his p/u..really nice and inexpensive..he bolted wood to the floor, than made a bed to pull out, than built runners, for the tray..maybe you could figure out what you need, take some wood and build your own, any width, length etc..just an idea for you
