Previous to 06 I do not feel it makes any difference, especially in the 400 and less HP. In the new engines you would have to pay me to own a Cat especially in the 500+ engines. In fact you can get paid to own one as Monaco just put out a offer of a $5000 discount if you buy a Beaver Patriot Thunder with a Cat engine. There are reports that Cat is going to get out of the OTR truck engine market before 2010.

Either should give you good service. You might want to look at engine size and coach weight with fuel milage in mind. Given the increase in fuel costs bigger might not necessarily be better. Smaller engines in smaller lighter coaches may offer attractive operating cost when compared to some of the big power units of today. Best of luck with whatever you decide on.

The report I read said that to meet the 2010 emission requirements they are going to partner with International. Sounded to me like there would be engines delivered in the traditional yellow paint, with "Caterpillar" on them. That doesn't sound to me like they are getting out of the business. Heck just this year they modified their C-9 engine to have more power and torque than the Cummins ISL engine. This doesn't sound like they are giving up.

Personally I would pick the engine that came with the motorhome I liked the best!

The story was under industry news on another forum. Also over the road truck engines were not going to be made by Cat. The changes are happening fast in the rv business. chevman

In the report I read Cat said they would no longer make over the road engines after 2010 and would concentrate on heavy equipment. I was told that Navistar would start making the over the road engines in 2010.

Exactly right, go to the Cat home page and read it. They will NO LONGER manufacture OTR engines after 2010.
