I've been hoping to hear MPG reports on the new engine.
Julie/David,
Do you guys remember how much engine break-in effected MPGs on your rigs? I've heard some people say it's not an issue any more - but other reports that diesel fuel efficiency does improve after 5K or 10K miles.
Shane
Of course I am hoping the mileage improves after the first 10k but break-in? I am not sure. In the old days the rings did need to seat before the engine was really optimised but rings were made of totally different materials than now used. But, I know gasoline engines and not really diesel so maybe it is so.
I think on the highways of Alaska, YT and BC we will average in the high 19's or 20's. At least I hope so! We leave in 35 days - the ferry used to be the most expensive part but now we are definitely on a short string. Trip was dreamed about for years and comitted to in January. We'll go regardless of price or mpg but it may be our last out of state trip until we move!
BTW, I could get better mpg if I was unloaded - I am sure of that. But we keep our Sprinter as an earthquake vehicle - something we can live in after the "big one" - fully loaded and ready to go.
Regards,
Keith

Good luck in your Alaska trip. I did the trip in our LTV in 2006 and I thought fuel prices were high then! We just returned from a month in eastern Canada and diesel prices were above $6.00/gal when we left (adjusted for liter to gallons and dollar exchange rates). But our theory is that we will travel now when we can in the years we are still able to. Our Alaska trip is covered in our blog in the June/06 period.

Incidentally, I also have a Chevy 5.7L and I consistently get 16MPG on the road (which is 95% of the mileage put on my 2002C 190P).
I was hoping to get a little better. However, it just may be the older motor. Your 5.7L was refined from the 5.7L in mine. My 5.7L only developed 190 hp. It was much higher by the time the 5.7L gave way to the new 6.0L

I didn't see a fuel mileage increase with my T1N Sprinter after 10,000 miles, but it did stop using a little oil. We passed the 10,000 mile mark on our trip to the Grand Canyon, so I'm not sure if it was the miles or the 110+ degrees temperatures while climbing long grades in the mountains, that get everything seated and stopped the oil consumption.
Our Volvo wagon increased fuel mileage gradually until it got about 20,000 miles on it. New it got 16-17 in town and 21mpg hiway, it finally got up to 22 city and 25-26 cruising 70-75mph. It got quicker too.

The biggest mileage difference maker between the two models
is the DPF filter. the way it works causes the decrease in fuel mileage.

I think we have the same motor as David (asheguy) in our 2005/2006 LTV. We seem to get about 22 mpg regardless. Rarely less, sometimes a little better.

We have 37,000 miles on our 2006 model. Our mileage has been pretty constant at 22 mpg. There has been no increase after the engine break-in period.

Keith,
What final drive ratio do you have? (I think the choices are 4.10 or 3.92 for the 2007/08 diesel models)
I believe the 2002/06 Sprinters had 3.72 or 4.11 final drive ratios, and most (2500s) came with 3.72.
The 3.72 should, I would think, provide better highway fuel economy, than the 3.92, 4.10 or 4.11 gears. (At a given cruising speed the engine is running slower, and closer to it's optimal efficiency point - but it trades off some pulling performance) But apparently Daimler was getting more complaints about driveability than fuel economy when they designed and spec'd the new model out 3 or 4 years ago.
Keith wrote: BTW, I could get better mpg if I was unloaded.
I know alot of people say that, but I have kept fuel economy records on my van since I got it (~70K miles), and I haven't been able to determine any impact due to weight carried. The only thing that seems to effect my mileage is speed. If we drive slow (55 mph) it gets better, if I drive fast (75), it gets worse
David wrote: I have kept a running record of all fuel used in our LTV and there has been no detectable change in MPG from day 1 as far as break-in. I have always heard reports of differences in MPG in vehicles after break-in but my personal experience does not show that, in the Sprinter or other vehicles. As I have said before on these threads, I do not drive in a manner that optimizes MPG so that may have a bearing on my experience. I do keep detailed records so tank-to-tank variations are evened out.
Thanks David. I've heard some technical people say that the way modern engines are built, this shouldn't be an issue any more - but I've never owned a new diesel - so it's good to get a actual report.

The standard axle in 2007 was a 4.18 ratio (not a 4.10 as printed on sales orders, sales literature and dodge build sheets - check the actual axle to confirm) - in 2008, the standard is a 3.92 ratio which is what I have.
