Thank You Roger, I would really like to hear from more "new sprinter" owners on their fuel consumption.

We have a new 2008 Sprinter RS, V6 engine, purchased in May. We now have abut 2,300 miles on it, all highway driving, typically 70-75 MPH. Last tank was 16.5. Rather disappointed. Looking forward to the big bump after the "break-in". No one seems to know when that will be, heard numbers varying from 5,000 miles to 100,000. Hope it's sooner rather than later.

When we were on our recent trip to Banff, we ran into two couples each separately renting in Canada the new 2008 Sprinter Roadtreks. They certainly were beautiful and I am already suffering from new RT/RS envy. They both reported they were in the 17 mpg range on their diesel engines while maintaining speeds on the highway averaging 70 mph during their respective cross country trips.

In addition to the mileage I reported originally I now have another 16.5 to add. I will have three more by July 9.

On July 9 I will be doing two 160 mile runs over the same course. One will be at 65mph and the other will be at 60mph controlled by my cruise control. The route is relatively flat with only a few metro areas that drop me to 30mph. You can expect the results on the 10th.

BTW, for weight I am almost fully loaded with all of our gear, minus only the DW and some clothing. Front axle=3380; Rear axle=3960; the whole thing=7680.

Regards,

Keith

Here is the latest and the last report until after the Alaska trip data is collected. I am reposting all the data so you don't have to go back to the beginning.

This is an 2008 V6 Diesel, under the hood of a Sprinter 2500 with interior done by Sportsmobile. It is 90% full of gear, has all water, propane, tools, etc. Actually only missing my DW and her "stuff." All except 2 of the fill-ups were at the same station and the same pump.

From the blog . . .
Mileage:
17.1; 16.7; 18.8; 18.8; 17.4; 14.3; 17.0; 15.6; 17.9; 16.5; 17.2; 17.6; 19.5*; 17.8**

The 19.5 was a 164.2 mile run to Fresno (early morning). The 17.8 was 159.6 miles return on the same course but later (and much hotter) in the day.

I would like to test 55mph later but one thing pops right up as I know the speeds that were driven - as soon as you jump into the 70’s for sustained periods, your mileage will suffer. There should be no real surprise there.

Speed was confirmed with my Scangauge. The Sprinter's speedometer read's 1 or 2 mph high.

I am confident now that mileage of 20 point something is possible. Beyond that remains to be seen.

Regards,

Keith

PS. By the way I paid $5.099 this AM starting, $4.959 in Fresno and $4.979 back here, at the same station where 14 hours before it had been $.12 higher - love it!

PSS. This is about the V6 mileage. I don't want to hear from you with the 5 cylinder - I've had all the "rubbing it in" I can stand.

What the speedometer reads should have no bearing. If you check against a GPS you will probably find your true speed and the odometer reading will probably be accurate. That's what I have determined with the old Sprinter.

I'm curious how you are determining your mileage after short distances like 164 miles. Are you filling up on those short lengths? I usually max out which is a range of over 500 miles. Each time you fill up there will be some differences as to how full you fill the tank because of the pumps. So, I would think the overall mileage from beginning to end would be more accurate than individual short legs.

The speedometer only has a bearing because I am testing mileage at 60 and 65. Mileage is a function of speed. I have to have points to compare.

The V6 does not have a range of 500 (lucky you!). 350 is probably about tops so I am running off the top half of the tank. The short mileage is because this is the only route I was on today that was basically the same, coming and going. I will have longer mileages returning from Alaska in August/September.

I use the same pump and nozzle most of the time but, in the end, these are just my numbers. They are provided for V6 owners or potential owners as anecdotal information only. Still I think I am closer than the EPA and their estimates. Once we have other 07, 08 owners reporting mileage we'll see.

Keith

Keith,

Thank you very much for the information! It's wonderful to get actual reports from a V6 (07/08) owner. There have been some other reports - but it's really helpful to get multiple reports to build an idea of what to expect.

Thanks again.

Keith-

I too would like to thank you for sharing your real-life data. I am contemplating to 'upgrading to a Sprinter-based B. Your results make an older (06, or earlier) more attractive -- at least for MPG.
