Hey fellow Jayco 17c owners, I need help. I've tried 3 times now to light my hot water tank. I've ran the propane on the stove for 2-3 minutes and I've made sure there's water in the tank (opened pressure valve and water comes out). I've held the pilot switch to the right, hold a flame to the termocoupler for 30 seconds then let the switch spring back to "Pilot", but I hear or see nothing. I try again and again and the give up. I tried the next day and nothing again. And I tried again last night and nothing.
Hints? Tips?

It may be a bad thermocouple.

Try to press the pilot knob in, or hold to the pilot setting,(should be spring loaded), and light at the orifice, hold in until the pilot heats the thermocouple, switch over to burner. You should see a flame at the orifice to the thermocouple when lighting. Most water heaters have lighting instructions printed on a metal tab at the burner. If you see no flame at the pilot orifice you have no gas coming to that thermocouple pilot.

I was having a similar situation with lighting my water heater for the first time this season. So...this is what I did...
First...I verified that I had propane coming to the thermo coupler. By having the knob turned to "On"...I could hear and smell the propane flowing in. So...I went to pilot setting (while holding it back) lite the thermo coupler. It did take a long time...maybe longer than 30 seconds...but I kept the flame on it...and finally it lit.
Hope this helps...but since the first lighting of the season...it has been easier to light.
Good luck!

thanks for the advice. I'll put some duct tape over the kids and dogs mouth tonight and try and listen in the "on" position.

I follow the directions that heavyputer has already put out there. One thing I would add for the 17C (in my experience) is to make sure the hot water setting is set to the lowest possible setting. Once the pilot is lit you can adjust the water temp.
good luck.
