I heard this story once, I don't have any idea if it'ss true or not, that this couple in a VW bug back in the 70s were about to run out of gas on I-85. They got on the CB and asked a how far to the nearest station cause they didn't think they were going to get much further. This trucker said, We will put you in the rocking chair. I'm just in front of you, pull up close and my buddy back a ways will move up behind you. Put the the car into neutral when we tell you to, and we will get you to close to your exit. Just before we get to it we will move off, you put it back in gear and then you should have enough gas to get to the station. Sounds like something I would have tried when I was young and foolish.

Does it work to follow a semi the reduce headwind therefore getting better MPG?

How far back do you follow?

Some truck just drive too fast for me.

YuP, it works. Get in behind one and feel the draft sucking your vehicle along. It's excellent for saving gas or diesel.

Just don't blink while drafting or you might crawl right up his ying-yang if he slams on his brakes. Also, pallets, bricks, etc. are road hazards that you cannot see while drafting......but the thrill is incomparable while drafting.

Thirty-five years ago, I had a vacuum gage on my car and I would find the best spot by watching the gage. Of course, back then I was immortal.

You can get effect from a truck at 50 feet back. Not the most but anytime you have less wind to push you will do better.

OK folks... Tailgating or driving too close for what ever the reason is not a safe or prudent thing to do... I do not see any point in continuing this thread.
