First, by way of introductions, I am in the process of purchasing a 2009 Rockwood Roo 233. I have been lurking here for a while, learning as much as I could, and contributing here and there where able.
I hope to pick up my trailer in the next two weeks and so getting down to the finer details like insurance. I have gotten a few online quotes and am surprised by the vast differences:
GMAC (via Good Sam):
Full Replacement Cost
$500 Deductable
$3000 Personal Effects
====
$640
Progressive
Full Replacement Cost
$500 Deducatable
$3000 Personal Effects
=====
$340/yr
Wayfarer
Full Replacement Cost
$300 Deducatable
$2550 Personal Effects
======
$270/yr
From this I have many questions, including:
1) Why such a variance?
2) Is the "Devil in the Details"? Beyond the basics of ductable and personal affects are there substantial core policy differences that I should be aware of with these companies?
3) Any familiarity with Wayfarer? In my searching on these forums I saw a reference to them but otherwise don't know anything about them and have never heard of them.
4) Any other recommendations for providers I should evaluate?
Check with the Ins co that you have your TV through. We saw the same differences. Just on a whim, I called my Auto policy. Turns out they are able to cover it. Since my wife and I are the only drivers with cars already, the camper was considered a 3rd vehicle. Drastic difference. Something to think about.
Off the top of my head I have a few more places you might try:
RV America Insurance
Geico also has specialized RV Insurance
Explorer RV Insurance
RV Insurance Specialists
Twin Peaks Rv Insurance
Gilbert RV Insurance
RV Insurance Solutions LLC
Sorry I don't have the links to these places, but if you search in Google I am sure you will be able to find their home pages.
I hope this helps, I can't help you as far as anything about Wayfarer Insurance as I have not heard of them before.
Just because one insurance is less expensive than another does not mean that it is bad or good. As you said, the devil is in the details. You are going to have to get the details on what they cover and do a side by side comparison.
Try National Interstate. I have them but have not used. Someone posted a good review of them a few days ago. Like others have said, check the details and compare apples-to-apples,
Do you have a Homeowner Policy? If so, that policy would cover your personal effects when you're away from home. Normally, at least 10% of the limit on your home's personal effects limit would apply to that kind of situation, and some insurers provide (automatically) more than 10%.
We went with Progressive for our Motorhome. I have to admit the price was so reasonable I was really worried about the coverage and support of the company. Until a fellow View/Navion owner got wrecked by an out-of-control driver on a foggy Texas road. Progressive's response was supurb and in just a few weeks he was back in a brand new MH . . .
RV insurance is an interesting topic which usually revolves around cost. Cost for RV insurance depends on your driving record, where you live, multiple policies and your credit score. Some folks like to work with their auto/home insurer and others like insurance companies that deal with RVs/boats/etc. Below are several insurance companies or brokers that cater to the RV owner. Some places provide a quote for six months and some for a year.
Personally, I went with National Interstate Insurance Co. through the Twin Peaks agency. Looking at my policy right now. I have awning replacement, collision, other than collision, diminishing deductible, emergency vacation expense, replacement cost for personal effects, total loss replacement cost (replacement the first 5 years, cost paid after that) and vacation liability. Total premium, $272 this year. This is my fifth year with National Interstate and my second trailer. I feel confident that I have everything covered. My RV is not a vehicle so I don't insure it like one.

Explorer RV Insurance Agency

Check with the Insurer you have. Claims are easier if both are with the same company. My agent gave me lots of help and advise when I was looking to upgrade my insurance. I found we had no reason to. We were well covered.
Be careful. Some will try to sell you lots of coverage you don't need. Pays to have a good agent.
