I was wondering. If we have directv "technically" can we just get a portable satellite dish and grab one of our receivers. I have seen some info but am confused. BTW it would be just the standard programming no hd, dvr, ppv, or subscription service.

thanks KC

We had 3 receivers in our house - 2 up and 1 downstairs. We put 2 in the 5'er and can watch different programming, which is WONDERFUL at the moment especially because we have 3 grandkids with us and they're watching cartoons in 1 room while we watch the news in the other. Many people will probably say "What are those kids doing watching cartoons while camping - they should be outside!" Well, they have been, minature golf, swimming, hiking, etc. but it's HOT and they're pooped and taking a break. But we don't have to give up the news either which is even greater!

Can't confirm it, but I have read here that DirecTV offers an "emergency package" at a moderate cost, which includes a portable dish and cables. It's intended for subscribers forced to evacuate by hurricanes, fires, etc. So your week-end evacuation isn't exactly forced...

Well.. Three answers YES no and no

If all you want is the "Satellite" channels like HBO, Cinimax, Hallmark, Weather Channel and __________ the answer is yes.. Also if you are only a few miles from home the answer is yes

If you want to watch your favorite daytime or prime time network television dramoa (Days of Our Lives.... Or CSI: for example) and you are more than a few miles (Perhaps as many as 300) From home. The answer is NO

And if you ask DirecTV they will tell you that's not allowed (The answer is NO)

So. My suggestion is DO NOT ASK DIRECTV!

How to fix the lack of network problem.....

Cancel the house account and open an RV account.. You can then subscribe to the East/West coast feeds (For an additional fee of course) different channel numbers but it's LA or NYC/Atlanta stations

I was in Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point) last week, 230 miles from home in Phoenix. My direct TV satellite worked great, recieved all my subscribed channels, including local channels. All I needed was a singal LNB dish, a subscribed reciever from the house, TV and cables.

We ran into the same thing as ajmorro67. We lived west of Portland, Oregon and brought our receiver and dish to this home south of Bend -- 245 miles while fixing up this home. We were able to get the Portland "local" (network) stations. BUT, when we signed up after moving here....we can't get them...VERY frustrating. Has to do with the local networks in Bend not giving waivers for us satellite users.
