Well Dick, for 36 years, we have left out valves OPEN, never closed them except when we move. And in all those years, I have never had but one problem.
But I gotta admit, Im one lucky fellow.

You are playing Russian Roulette with your tanks, and yes, you are lucky. Toilet-to-tank relationship and inlet pipe-to-outlet pipe relationship are allowing you to get away with this, but it is definitely not a good idea. The owner's manuals on all the self-contained RV's we have owned warn against leaving the tank valves open, because they are well aware of the problems that can result, and I've had to help correct them on a relative's trailer. Good luck in the future. I'll continue to follow the manufacturer's directions.

We leave both valves closed. Empty the grey twice a week and the black once. We also regenerate the water softener weekly, if it needs it.

Anyone who leaves the black open is asking for big trouble in river city. We have seen the results and it is ugly

What Dianne said...
The newbies next to where I am at left both open for a couple of week and could not figure why the toilet was trying to overflow!!!!
Being the nice guy that I am, , I used my flush king to clear it up but it took about a dozen flushes and I am sure they still have a messy build up below the throne....

OK. I left the valve closed until the black tank showed 3/4 full, then dumped it. The guage showed empty but the toilet is plugged. I have tried pulling out the tp (messy job), using my flusher which just filled up the toilet and tried pushing the mess through. Any more ideas. I'm waiting for my wife to come with a wire coat hanger (hard to find).

Any and all help will be appreciated.

You are probably gonna need to go the Walmart or the like and get one of those wands you hook to the garden hose.

That's what I used when I said the flusher. Hopefully, I can pulled enough of the wad out when I get the wire coat hanger. Thanks anyway.

We had the same problem our first summer in the 5er. Finally took a big, burly RV tech with 3/8 or 1/2 pvc ramming down the toilet to clear the blockage. We also tried a snake from both ends. From inside, it could take a long time. From outside, it could be tough getting into the correct tank - depends on your piping.

Good luck.

P.S. Don't believe the gauges. Wait until the toilet burps.
