How close to Mt Airy? I live on 52 at the VA line. Goosepoint as Lucy said above is a great campground getting hard to get in unless you plan ahead. We also love Mountain Stream, wonderful Christian couple that own it and the creek runs right behind your site, very peaceful. If your kids can't entertain themselves it may not be the place for you. My kids loved hiking up the creek.
I am staying at the KOA in Fancy Gap the 13-20th due to high fuel costs, the new owners have done a lot of work and it is a very nice campground. Going East the KOA in Shalotte NC use to be one of our favorites, not on the beach but a short 5 mon drive to ocean Isle pear and beach without the crowds of M.B. However I went to book a trip there this Fall and their rates have gone way up to $52 per night. They have priced themselves out of the area. For a slight bit more you can stay at one of the CG's on the water with lazy river etc.... Well Howdy neighbor!! If I can ever help you just ask.

We went to Shallote KOA with 2 other couples back at Memorial Day. Made out reservations back in early March. Mentioned that we wanted to be next to these other couples but when we got their we were as far away from them as we could have possibly have been. Yes, as mentioned very pricy, internet cost extra, must supervise kids at play ground (when is a swing set). Probably will not go back anytime soon.
Wilmington KOA as mentioned is one of our favorites. Same folks own the Smithfield KOA and New Bern KOA. Go to their website and they have a coupon where if you spend 2 nights at one of their KOA's you get a free night at one of their other sites.
In Wythville Va. (I think I spelled that correct) not to far from you is a KOA that my kids say is their favorite. Pool has a slide, game room with indoor putt-putt, go kart racing very close.
My 11 year old daughter likes to rank cg as we vist. She list them as:
1- Wythville KOA
2- New Bern KOA - not much to their other than tthe pool
3= Wilmington
4- Smithfield KOA- bugs terrible their
5- Ashville west KOA
6= Fayettville KOA - nats very terrible but sites very big and place was very clean and very nice.
Shallote is at the bottom.
We are currently at Mt. Pleasant KOA in SC. We will not rank this site until we arrive home and evaluate our stay. So these rankings are likley to change. LOL
As you can tell we stay at a lot of KOA's. I have found that you know pretty much what to expect from them.
Fancy Gap KOA is tops on my list. Nicely run and easy pull Thur sites at the main entrance building.
I have stayed at Shallotte KOA but not in 3-4 years??
Wilmington and NewBern KOA's good campgrounds have stayed at both enjoyed my stays.
Jordan Lake Crosswinds Loop B is tops as it is only 45 miles from my house. BUT hard to get in with Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Durham crowd all right there unless you can get in on a Wednesday night but work commuting is hard with 8am gate opening. I hate the early gate closing too.
Next would Kerr Lake JC Copper CG at Satterwhite Point. this Labor day will be our 4-5th stay here.
Mountain Stream RV park is a very nice place to camp, if you want to explore the Blue Ridge parkway and Mt Mitchell too. Been there done that..
Plus you have a brand new campground right there in Mt Airy off the US52 to the I-77 loop not sure of that roads name?
Boone KOA is nice, Flintlock on past Boone is nice if you can back into the tight spots(much easier with a popup).
Lets see where else I have camped in NC.. Carowinds campground closed right after we camped there, then reopened a year or two later with nicer sites with real nice(high) prices!!!
Dan Nichols was nice too, this is county owned campground and has lots of stuff to do with kids.
NA$CAR camping at Lowe's motor speedway, Morehead family campground thats real fun but NO hookups or anything. Just bring your generator and water, carry your waste home with you. Same can be said for Rockingham .. had lots of fun there too. NOW its closed but we camped many a spring and fall there.. If you count the middle of February spring and middle of November fall...
So there are lots of places in NC to camp, some close to you and others a few miles away.
Have fun camping NC,

LakeN wrote: Do you know about Fairystone St Park in VA? It would be a short drive for you. Located near Bassett on Philpott Lake. Has a great lake with a toy in water area (if you have smaller kids) & beach.
Further down the same road is Goose Point. Have only driven thru but gets good reviews.
Also Stone Mtn. (NC) has added a new camping section with electric and a very nice bathhouse.
Enjoy!
Oh, I am SOOOOO glad I found this post! We just bought a hybrid yesterday and I'm dying to try it out next weekend (we pick it up next Tuesday) and I wanted to try a new campground. I told DH that we've never been camping in Virginia and I wanted to go there. I choose Fairy Stone State park after searching through the Virginia State Park website. We live in the Winston-Salem area, so we're not far from it at all. It looks like a really nice campground!
