FWIW I bought the truck in my sig two weeks ago. My mpg the first week was 14. My old TV was a Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 with a gas 5.9 ltr engine. I was getting the same mpg with that truck also, both solo. Never figured out what I was getting pulling my 7500 lbs TT, and never really cared because they were doing a job, and that was the only reason for having a pickup with large gas engines.

Interesting, but I venture that most of the folks on these forums are pulling much more than 3500#. That 1500 pulling 7500-8000# TTs around the mountains (as I do) would present a far different picture. If I had a (Casita, for example) I wouldn't be pulling with a 2500. My Burb is used strictly for towing and, while fuel economy is certainly a concern, it's simply a part of the trip budget now, if I were to choose to budget.

I'm kinda blown away that towing 3500 lbs, carrying 700 lbs of stuff, and having four people in the truck still garnered just under fifteen and a half miles per gallon.

That just made me think. Something has to be wrong there.

I have a friend that has an 07 1500 5.3 4x4 and that is what he gets empty with a bed cover and carring no weight.

Towing 3500lbs, hauling 700lbs, and 4 people, I honestly don't believe it.

A relative & I just completed an 1100 mile round trip towing nearly identical, 18' (~3500lb) boats. We each had 4 passengers and about 700lbs of stuff in the beds. His truck was an '02 2500HD 6.0L/3.73 4x4, mine is an '08 1500 5.3L/3.73 4x4. Both trucks were ext. cab standard bed.

'02 2500HD 6.0L/3.73: 10.2mpg avg.
'08 1500 5.3L/3.73: 15.4mpg avg.

We followed each other (same speeds) and bought fuel at the exact same places.

WRONG!!!!!

Unless the '02 2500HD has had an aftermarket gear swap, the only factory ratio offered for the '02 2500HD 6.0L gasser either manual, or automatic was 4.10.

I'd have to agree that the 2500HD had a 4.10 in it and not the 3.73.

Well, 4.10's on the 2500HD would help explain the 10mpg. My cousin assumed he had 3.73's.

Regarding my 1/2T's mileage, it gets 22mpg hiway empty thanks to the AFM. I was actually a little disappointed with the 15.4mpg towing the relatively light boat.

I laugh everytime I see someone trying to compare a brand new model with one that is 6 years old. Try comparing an 08 to an 08.

the new diesels sure dont get real good gas milage like the older ones i have a 04 dodge 1500 hemi and my dad has an 08 dodge diesel. he gets about 2 mpg better then me for the most part i get 15 on the highway he gets 17. when pulling my camper he gets 10 mpg and i get 8 its 7000 pounds so his is alot nicer to do it in, but mine does fine to so a 35000 doller truck compared to a 50000 doller + truck and higher maintenece costs think im happy i got a gasser
