Mountain Stream RV Park in Marion, NC. We loved it there. Small CG at the base of the Appalachian Mountains. That babbling stream runs directly behind 2/3rds of the sites. Full hookups. Free WiFi -- no cable though - but a portable satelitte would work in the right spot. Access to Blue Ridge Parkway just 5 miles up the road.
Checkout this page on their site --- page down to May 2007 to see site 19 & 20 -- they expanded these sites recently. We had site 19 in 2005 -- now it is much nicer.
The stream is fabulous -- you can hear it everywhere in the park. The campfire ring on site 19 sits right along side the stream. There is nothing better than sitting next to that stream with a big fire. Leave your windows open at night and that stream will sing you to sleep.

Creekwood Farms is a nice campground, on a creek and just about 5-7 miles from Ghost Town in Maggie Valley, and many other attractions, but it's about 22 miles into NC. I'd go to Cades Cove, real nice there.
Mountain Stream park is quite a way's down 40 form TN..It's very small and on a creek almost small enough to jump across. When we stayed there, it was though they catered to the "upper crust", so to speak. We've never been back.

Never been here but looking at these pictures the view is awesome. You are only two hours away. Pack up and head east! Go see the Biltmore while you're there.

In the lead we have Townsend TN. followed closely by Maggie Valley and other NC sites. Bringing up the rear is a "near boondock" adventure in the GSMN park.
All of these are great escapes from busy Pigeon Forge. They are close enough to be convenient but far away enough to relax. Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg are not for everybody. The areas around the Smoky Mountains have something for everyone (except for those seeking sandy beaches).
Take the information in this forum, find your perfect spot and set up camp. Stay as long as you want, spend lots of money (we need the tax income) and enjoy your time RVing.
Pigeon Forge is the Redneck Las Vegas and way over crowded. I much prefer Gatlinburg. Come in from 321 and stay at Outdoor Resorts of America, beautiful CG. If you want more nature and away from people go back to the NC side and Maggie Valley Chimney Rock area is very nice. Mountain Stream is quite a drive East but is a beautiful small CG but no pool. The owners are a very nice Christian couple with a CG wide potluck every Sat followed by a singing. It is very peaceful and relaxing and there are fish in the ncreek, my son and I caught two nice brown trout and cooked them on the campfire. Nothing like fresh fish over a campfire.

For us Pigeon Forge is a quiet vacations worst nightmare.
.... but I guess I'm thankful that places like Pigeon Forge exist - they keep the folks who like that kind of experience entertained while the rest of us can enjoy a more natural experience elsewhere ....

I say Tremont Hills located 30 minutes away from Pigeon Forge in Townsend and only 8 miles from the top to Cades Cove. Two blocks from the SMNP boundary.
Real nice river sites.
Pigeon Forge this time of year is a nightmare with the bumper to bumper traffic. It's just not the best time of the year to visit anywhere really in that area.
You could come over to NC. There are many CGs around Cherokee, and Bricyon City, and Dillsbourogh. We like Holly Cove, on the Great Smoky Mountain Freeway, mile marker 77.
For really cool mountain mornings, and nights. Come over to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Seluded Valley, and Buck Hill. Small CGs. High enough to get away from the heat. Both on the Toe River. Bring jackets all year round. Neither in a touriest trap. Just nice quiet CGs. Above Marion NC. About 20%F lower, above Marion.
Then there are the NP CGs on the Blue ridge Parkway. Always cool, and near lakes and rivers. Linville Falls is a great place to go to see the falls. Julian Price has the prettiest lake you'll find.
Do be carefull of the CGs in Maggie Valley. Most don't allow campfires at your site. Stayed there once. Never again. Seems it is a city ordance.
