This may have been covered in the past, but when all the TV stations are broadcasting digital hi-def over the air,
what modifications will be needed to receive a tv pictures in an RV?
Just a different TV? A box between the coax out and the TV?
How about units like my Jayco that came with a flat panel TV standard?
Thank you

If your TV has a digital tuner you are all set . If not you will need a box . Cneck the sepc in the book that came with the TV it should tell you if its digital . If not get a coupon on line like they have been talkihg about.

Since it sounds like your current TV's don't have digital tuners built in, you will need to install a digital converter box for each TV you have in your RV. There are many available at just about any electronics retailer. You can also get up to two $40 discount coupons for the boxes here: Converter Box Program

You want to check and see if your tv has an ATSC receiver built in. Analog tv in the North America is NTSC. As long as your TV has ATSC, you'll be ok. *Most* of the newer LCD TV's have it built in.

If your TV was manufactured after March 1 2007 it should have the ATSC tuner built in. If that is the case that's all you need to receive the digital signal. If you want HDTV your TV must be an HDTV capable of either 720p or 1080i resolution. There is also 1080p resolution but no stations are broadcasting in 1080p yet and probably won't be for some time to come.

I had a tv repairman tell me that even if you have a box to convert the signal, if you are not within 30 miles of the broadcast origination, you won't get a picture.
He said that you would be better off looking for a dish.

I finally hooked up a digital converter to my 2006 ROO Concertone TV/DVD/Stereo receiver. I hooked it to an antenna out plug then ran wires to the RCA input jacks on the receiver. Unfortunately... the audio went in through the Concertone, but the video did not.(Big Surprise!!) I was able to hook the video plug straight to the LCD monitor.
I am using a Radio Shack converter. I am very impressed with the picture quality and the range. I am able to pull in more stations than just with the analog antenna.
It works well with my power antenna.
I think you will be happy with it.

Sort of an odd question and slightly off topic...
Do the converter boxes generate a lot of heat? I am picking one up later this week and have a tight spot to put it in. Also, does it have to be in a horizontal position to operate or can you set it on end?
Thanks for any insight!

We've got a digital flat screen LCD in the Roo but also went ahead and got a digital converter box since it's only $9 with the coupon, it's so tiny it doesn't take much room. It's just in the Roo because someday somewhere we will be camped around someone that will need it. We have always done things like that (extra drinking water hose sections, plenty of fuses, hockeypucks (we wouldn't give away a dogbone and when we were in the popup we had 4 complete extra latch sets in our tool/fix bag as well. By the time we said goodbye to it
a week ago, we were down to 1 but we have 3 new friends out there in the world for giving them the latches) So if you see us at camp and you need something besides cash of course (snicker) ask. we may have it. just a bad habit I guess. spare this , spare that.
