I had to get my PUP inspected before I could license it this week. During the inspection (which was a waste of $70 by the way), the inspector told me that we had an old style propane tank and that we couldn't even get it filled anymore. Is that true? Or is it just some weird KY thing?
I don't really mind getting a new tank, but dang it, it's just one more thing! You know?
Here's what mine currently has on it, hope this photo is good enough:

True. You need to get the new tank with the OpD (overfill protection device).
This is Statewide law, not just Kentucky.
About $26.00 at Costco or Lowes.

It may well be. There is a nationwide requirement for a new style valve assembly with an Overfill Prevention Device ("OPD"). Can't tell from your photo, but the valve handle will be triangular in shape.
He's correct that propane stations cannot (by law) refill bottles with the old style valves.

Better yet,
Swap it out with a Blue Rhino tank at Lowes or Wal-Mart.

I felt weird doing it but this is how I changed out mine. I even had one of the clerks help me and I explained that I thought my tank had an old valve on it. They didn't care and swapped it out.

You can't tell form the photo but you can have it revalved and tested but them you're beyond the cost of a new one. If it were me. I'd buy one of these with the gauge. Propane Cylinders w/Gauges

INSPECTION? INSPECTION? GEEZ . . . GLAD I LIVE IN THE WILD WEST
THAT ASIDE . . . THE NEW TANKS MUST HAVE THE OVERFILL PROTECTION. AND, FOR WHATEVER IT IS WORTH, I SELDOM HAVE MINE FILLED. EVERY TIME I GO IN TO HAVE IT FILLED THEY TELL ME IT IS FINE! EVEN WHEN I USE THE FURNACE!

I swapped out an old style tank from a junk grill and had to pay extra, than for a similar tank swap.
