I had the same problem with my wife so I decided to come up with a solution. I have the truck wired for the backup camera on the back of the trailer so I bought a second camera. I put it on when backing up to the trailer and remove it when I hook up the one on the trailer. I now do it myself as the wife is packing up the inside of the trailer. It makes life way more injoyable not to start the trip with a fight.

I'm a simple guy living in this complex world...so when we camp, we like simple rules that work everytime...without any stress:
1. Everyone out of the cab...including the furkids.
2. WE walk back and agree where the target for TT rear corner should be (key words are "we...agree").
3. When backing up...she must move so she can see me in the mirror at all times (key words are "she must move...see me...at all times").
4. We start with her hands up and over her head...about 2 feet apart.
5. And...you can guess the rest--as I backup and about a foot away...she positions her hands to be about a foot a part.
6. When she gives me "power to the people sign" (closed fist)...it means stop.
7. I "wiggle" the TT so the position is perfect (you gotta adjust for the view, clearance for awning, side-to-side level, etc).
Practice does make perfect...I can usually back the truck so the hitch and TT match up pretty close...but not in my first year. I too use reference points on the ground that are about ___ inches apart when I need to backup up ___ inches.
As for the "right and left thing"--solo practicing in a empty parking lot will be the best Dr Phil session you'll ever need. For pretend barriers, the painted lines in the parking lot are good training tools.
Practice and Patience are the key words...My $0.02 (USD of course!)

This was a great morning laugh. For now I've realized backing a TT isn't the easiest thing in the world. First time getting my TT in the driveway took me 45 minutes and the second time 30 minutes. I've had to have a fellow neighbor help me both times.
i got a backup camera in color for under 100 that mounts to the liscence plate and i can just turn that on when i get close (it dont show the bumper hitch but the hitch itsself you can usualy see the ball but if not all the spotter says ur on it
and the hitch will be centered on the camera so if you see the ball centered then youre good
