This is acid reflux - was wondering how much this is caused by meds vs aging? Maybe you all could help me determine if this is just another aging "thing" or as I presume it has more to do with meds, etc.

We have completely changed our diets .. no more soda pop, and watch now much acid foods like tomato sauces we eat, also no raw onions, very, very small chopped peppers in my salads now, and oh, we switched to Folgers 1/2 caff (too old to give up coffee!).

Oh, I did wind up with an esophageal ulcer .. which with prevacid and diet is gone. My doctor took color photos and gave me .. wow what a waker upper!

This has probably been discussed before ..

Can't tell you anything about GERD, but the coffee thing turned out to work well with consistently adding a little more decaf to the mix each time until it was 100% decaf. After that, we just didn't feel like drinking coffee any more. Hmmm. That says something, I guess. I still like the taste, but I never drink because it just never occurs to me that I want some enough to buy it. That was about 20 years ago now. Wouldn't probably have thought of it, if you hadn't mentioned it.

My ENT doc has me on over the counter generic Prilosec (Omeprazole). Much cheaper than the name brand. Haven't had acid reflux in all the time I've been on it. I eat & drink whatever I want consistent with keeping blood sugar under control.

Try this:

The Low Blood Sugar Handbook

There is about a 3 day withdrawal period (sugar). Have a little apple sauce if you start to come unglued.

Most acid reflux is simply your body telling you that it doesn't like the stuff your putting down your throat. You just need to change the input.

You might be able to find this book at the library.

It can be caused by meds but also diet, stress, etc. At night for relief you can elevate your head or mattress so you aren't lying flat on your back which gives the reflux the opportunity to just back up the throat! When I had experienced a bout of GERD doctor put me on Prilosec and to help with stomach pain a medication called carafate which basically helps coat the stomach. Changed my diet for several months but after that was able to eat offending foods again. Now that I'm older it's other stuff...gallbladder does not like any fatty foods, so I'm back to a different diet but it's better anyway because it's healthier for me!! If it's not one thing it's always another!

I rarely have trouble with this anymore, but found that liquid Tylenol will help with the throat burning/pain.

.

In the old days (while being 60 lbs over weight), I've had acid reflux (aka: GERD) for many years. Talk about "pain in the throat". For me, here's a few tricks that worked.

They are:
- Put 3 x 2x6 small boards under the head board posts of one's bed. Thus, making the bed have a slope for 4+ inches. This slope helps keep the acid in the stomach area - instead of allowing it to gravity bubble upwards into the throat - where it burns the throat wall lining. Don't use an extra pillow under your head because that traps more boiling acid in the throat area. It's always best to "slope the entire bed 4-6 inches". Higher the better. Note: The slope does take some getting use to but today, I find it very `uncomfortable` to sleep in a perfectly flat bed.
- With one's meds, have it with a glass of milk. This milk helps coat the stomach wall and thus, the meds are disolved in the intestines - instead of in the stomach cavity. Before having meds with milk, do check with your pharmasist. Some meds cannot be taking with milk (or food).
- Change the time of your meds. I used to take some of my meds before brushing my teeth. Now, I take that same med at dinner time. Thus, allowing it to be "settled" in a vertical positon before bed time. This dramatcially helped my digestive system.
- Approx 2 hours before bed, eat an apple. Seriously, eat an apple. The cider stuff in the apple helps reduce stomach acid action.
- Do NOT eat anything before going to bed. Especially greasy or spicey foods. Learned that the hard way - many times over.
- If you have some, drop the extra body fat. Since Jan '08, I've dropped over 40 lbs and it dramatically reduced my GERD pain. Most days today, my lower throat is now painless. Today, I often forget my body has GERD (or has a high risk of getting GERD again).

If you perform a NetSearch on GERD, I'm sure you'll find lots of other improvement tricks as well. For example: - Click Here -

Hope his helps as well....

I have found it helps to not eat anything after 6 PM.

DH and I both take this -- it works great! Same results you've had. Also, we don't eat after 7:00 at night....and go to bed about 11:00. So -- try not eating for 4 hours before going to bed. Good luck!
