Yep! Except for the kids who run along the top ridges and daringly jump from one precipice to the next.
To stay on topic, we just got back from a family reunion and found a lot of kin complaining about GERD. Some are still at the TUMS stage, just beginners.

I am a survivor of GERD and now I have no symptoms. I now sleep on two pillows, one of them is a Sobakawa which keep my head stable and elevated. The main reason I'm better is the lack of stress. My boys are grown and I'm retired so the acid factory is closed!

The structural abnormalities seem to run in my family too. My dad ate TUMS for years. My mother had a scope a few years ago and had a procedure (not sure if stretched or band). She's on prilosec now. I've had problems for years, the scope and esophageal ulceration, don't know what I'd do without the blockers available now. Nexium works better for me than any of the others.
Aside from the typical foods and overeating implicated in flare ups, I've found sweet, sugar loaded foods cause me the most problems. Anyone else?

Salsa, anything spicy. Mexican food has sent me into fits a few times. Bud and I both take Protonix and have for many years, despite the fact that it isn't formulary at our HMO. Prilosec, Nexium, etc have not worked for us.
The sad thing is, none of these proton pump inhibitors has been proven to do anything to prevent possible future esophageal cancer, and it is now, statistically, the fastest increasing form of cancer. The drugs do save a lot of misery, though.

As stated early in this thread, acid reflux is your body telling you that you've put the wrong stuff down your throat. I say "stuff" because it is NOT FOOD.
Only eat natural food that was available 10,000 years ago. This does not include Hostess Twinkee's
I use to consume 75 Tums a day thinking I just had a loose upper esophageal sphincter. Had all the tests done to no avail.
Started eating only food available 10M years ago (see earlier post for a suggested book). No more tums or any other medication.
Think about it. Do you really think that after how many million years of evolution, all of a sudden everybodys upper GI is broken? Or if you're a Creationist -"God don't make junk".

I'm not so quick to jump to the conclusion that every case of GERD is due to improper diet. 10,000 years ago the average life expectancy was probably less than 30 years. You suppose the extra 40 years of living may have some factor in parts wearing out or not functioning properly? I know diet and life style has alot to do with treating GERD and possibly even cause in some cases, BUT it's just not that simple.

I totally agree with dt. Also anti inflamatory meds can hurt the lining of your stomach causing gastritis. stress is another factor; so we can eat right and still have problems. however, a bland diet is best for gerd.

Onions and tuna did it for me... That's about as natural as you can get. Stress is a huge issue and it's not as if snapping your fingers will get rid of it.

My rheumatologist suggested I take an antacid with my meds as they would otherwise upset my stomach. I do this, limit the acidic foods/beverages I eat/drink, try not to eat after about 6pm, and not lay down after eating. I limit my carbonated beverages, limit alcohol intake, and am beginning to lower the caffeine consumed. So far am doing fairly well.
It took me several weeks this spring to identify the post nasal drip (allergies) was really upsetting my tummy, so have added Zyrtec (otc) to my daily meds and it's made a big difference.

Acid blockers (i.e. Prilosec etc) cause bone loss so you can add osteoporosis as well as esophageal cancer to your future problems.
