This is a long shot, but we've tried everything. My wife has had a chronic cough all our married life (48 years). We've tried all the allergy pills, zyrtec, claritin, etc; don't seem to help. A very expensive air filter (medical clean room type) in the bedroom does seem to give us mostly a good nights rest. When we get into heavy traffic with lots of exhaust fumes, her cough really gets going, so it does seem allergy/pollution related.

One doctor said it was acid reflux, but nexium, protonix, etc didn't seem to faze it. Another doctor said she needed her sinuses reamed out, but an MRI showed them to be normal and open. We've had scans of her throat & stomach, all OK.

I guess we'll die without ever figuring out what is causing the cough, but have any of you had similar problems? Any solution?

Texas is in the Top 10 for allergies. Does it change at all according to the season of the year? See an allergist? A full physician with an allergy specialty.

Does she take medication for high blood pressure? Coughing is listed as a side effect of many of them.

Asthma can cause coughing.

No high blood pressure medications. Asthma? How do you diagnose it? Can they do anything for it?

Yeah, we've tried allergists. Seems all they can offer is zyrtec, claritin, etc.

My wife was diagnosed with COPD and asthma for 8 years. Last year they found a small cancer on her lung and took the upper lobe of the right lung out. Her coughing stopped. It appears the cancer was irritating a nerve that caused the coughing and the symptoms of COPD. She has none of them now. I am not saying your wife has that but many things can give similar indications of another and be wrong.

Hi Sorry to hear about the cough, I had a similiar problem that defied all the tests the hospital could think to run. Finally had a lung biopsy that caused the problem to escalate. About a week later the doctor called and said I had a little known case of klebseola phneumonia ( sp ) and a yeast infection . The surgeon was sure that it would be cancer and was real excited to announce that it wasnt. It took a couple of weeks before it started to settle down, but it finally setteled down, no problem now.

I'm making copies of all this so I can show it to our doctors. Maybe the most difficult part is deciding which/what kind of doctor to see. Seems that many of them are not very innovative/curious; just go through their routine and dismiss you.

What did they do for the pneumonia/yeast infection?

I, too, had a cough ever since I was a kid. Drs. gave me every med known for sinuses. Finally, at age 40 a new doctor said I had asthma. Talk to your regular doctor and show him these pages.....eventually you may have her see a lung specialist (if it's pertaining to the lungs)

Asthma might be the cause. Her mother had a chronic cough as well that no one could ever figure out. What do they give you for asthma? Is it steriods? Don't they have long term problems? Course, if you're 69 years old, I guess long term is relative. Ha!
