Hi..I am first time poster to the forum. I am on a six week trip and have recently had a problem keeping both A/C units on as we travel on the road using Generator power. The breakers keep tripping when both units are on.

As a result we are staying very warm inside the RV.
This has only happened as we have crossed from Fresno California across Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, texas and now Oklahoma. The outside temps habe been consistently above 93-100+degrees. When the temp drops we stay cool and no problem under shore power(50 amp).
We have switched off all other AC sources including Refrigerator, water heater, TVs, Satellite receiver.
Do we have to live with this when it is this hot or is can this be fixed? Our RV is new since April of this year (2008).
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How does it do with just ONE AC on max? And how many KW (Kilowatts) is your Gen-Set? TOM

What is your voltage reading when running off of the generator with one and then two A/C's running. If it does fine on shore power I expect your generator output is going well below 120 volts. About 108 volts is a low as we can function.

Hi Guy's,

Most RV roof airs pull condencer air from the rear and pushes it out the side,or top. Traveling 60/70 mph on the road sometimes doesn't allow the discharged air to flow properly and results in overheating your roof air. When a overheat happens, the unit will overdraw on amps resulting in a tripped curcuit braker and you hot..

Good Luck

You seem to be saying that it trips the breaker ONLY during travel, never on the pedestal.

Has it EVER worked nominally during travel in the past?

The vehicle flexing may also have rubbed the insulation off of a power line. It might be any other reason as well, a sharp corner, etc., rubbing thru the insulation. The vehicle flexing/bouncing during travel, may be grounding the generator line. Exactly what breakers are tripping? The one(s) on the generator?

This post and the need to know what your gen/set is putting out ,leads to the answer.. also, the start up phaseing on the a/c's will need to be addressed..

Thanks for all the replies...the gen is Onan 8000...the front a/c breaker seems to always trip...can run with rear a/c ok..just not enough to keep us cool....no breakers tripping at lower outside temps..i.e. below 92 or so...

What size breaker is it maybe someone changed it in the past or could be just a weak breaker. This is the cheaper route to start with.
