I guess this is a stupid question and I feel bad for not knowing. If your RV has a battery, and you want to plug something in while you are driving, such as DVD player, crock pot, toaster oven etc. will it work or do you have to turn generator on? Thank you very much.

Anything using AC needs the generator. A 12v DC appliance could be plugged into a 12v outlet to run off the battery. If you install an inverter to change 12v DC to 110v AC you could run small appliances on the inverter's 110v outlets.

Just a note, inverters are rated in Watts, the cigerate lighter type are userly rated 300 Watts and under. Good for a lap top PC, Television, chargeing the Cellphone. To run large items i.e. toaster overn, Microwave, coffe pot you will need to match or be greater then the list wattage for that item. The inverter has to be hard wired to the battery. Those larger inverters also drain the battery quite fast. If the RV engine is set up to charge the batteries then you shouldn't have to much a problem.... Just my 2.7 Cents. Bill

Generally speaking, anything with a heating element will require the generator.
I have a large, hardwired inverter, and I do run the coffee pot sometimes while driving, but you need to understand that it will draw 10 times it's rated 120 volt amps from the DC system (a 10 amp coffee pot will draw 100 amps from the DC system). It may work for awhile, but the alternator may not keep up with the rapid discharge.

DVD player, TV, crock pot = inverter (500 watts will run a lot of small stuff and the current draw is low enough almost any alternator can handle it)

Toaster oven, AC, hair dryer, microwave = generator.
