Requesting best way to travel East from Yellowstone to SD. Driving a 33' Class A towing a car and leaving Yellowstone mid July. Have heard #14 can be treacherous. Looking for feedback.

Hwy 14 is a very scenic drive. However, Hwy 16 is the way to go.

16 is definately an easier drive, less grade and fewer switchbacks. We just returned from Yellowstone, took 16 on the way there and 14 on the way home.

You could just go north from West Yellowstone and take 90 thru Montana and drop down into WY, if you didn't care about hitting Cody(great rodeo and Buffalo Bill Museum. It would be the easiest drive but, the drive out the east entrance is sure pretty!

HWY 14 is steep with many switchbacks. My old Beaver MH had a rear mount radiator and came close to overheating several times(summer heat). Had I known it was so steep at the begining I would have dropped the toad and had my wife drive it to the top. Very nice scenery.

I posted the same question last August. I was with two other 40 foot rigs headed to Newfoundland. I worried about it a lot because of posts here. We decided the scenery might be worth it. It was. The road is a little narrow, a little steep and there are some tight turns. I've seen worse. But, it was not a problem for any of the three rigs. 45 foot tour buses use the road without problem. We saw lots of motorhomes and other RVs.
The road down the east side into Dayton is steep. Use the lowest gear you have!

I couldn't agree more. It's beautiful up there. To many people worry about the slightest grade up or down. And if it isn't a 4 lane highway it's too narrow
