The Titan is right there as far as towing vs the Tundra. Can't really go wrong.

I would have gotten a Tundra after I chose to forgo a 3/4 GMC diesel, but then I decided to go the V6 route and got a Tacoma and I'm happy with it due to its mileage. But if I were to get a 1/2ton it would be a Tundra, no second thoughts. All of my cheap (cept the Taco) foreign cars have outlasted my $30K+ GM/Ford cars with way fewer problems over 150K miles. I put a lot of faith in the Tundra even though it is one of Toyota's lowest rated vehicles--quality still high above other brands.

We have owned a 1975 Ford 3/4 ton, 1987 Ford Ranger, 2001 Nissan Xterra (tow Pak) and currently have a 2005 Titan. I really like the newer Ford Pkp's but the local dealer just stinks when it comes to service. We got the best deal in 2005 on the Titan 4wd Tow Pak. and DW as well as I could not be happier. Today it seems that most half ton trucks pretty much compute out to about the same specs. when similar packages are purchased on them. We plan on keeping the Titan until retirement in just about five years but then will move up to a larger pkp with the purchase of a 5th wheel.

So far no one has posted exact fuel economy figures for empty and towing. How come? Are you folks afraid to tell the real mileage numbers? Either will do a good job as long as you stay within the weight/towing ratings for the truck. Will they replace a 3/4 ton diesel? No. but many people do not need or want that large of a truck to tow their smallish trailers. People no matter what need to choose and size the truck to the anticipatated load and camp away.

I am not afraid. My Tundra has gotten as low as 7.5 MPG (in a steady 30-40 MPH direct headwind) to as high as 10.5 MPG on flat ground, which is not a reality in Nevada as it is hilly everywhere. Last trip I got about 10 MPG..and that was going up a grade of no less than 6.3% for 14 miles. Some of it was better than 7%. Of course I got bad mileage then, but going down and the rest of the way worked out to 10 MPG. My trailer was loaded with water, etc. so I figure the weight was close to 7K lbs. My truck is a daily driver for work, and I get around 18 MPG then, including city/freeway driving.
For a mid sized trailer, the Tundra is a great truck...no complaints.

As low as 9mpg with 87 octane and as high as 11 mpg with 93 octane at a steady 65 mph highway. I towed the same routes 2X with each and calculated it out. The Titans engine management computer will make use of higher octane fuel to prevent timing retardation due to any knocking when under a load such as towing. The 5.6L was originally intended to use premium fuel but it was changed and also a flex fuel option was added.

its amazing i think this is the first titan/tundra thread where i havent seen brand bashing yet..
you can see in my signature what i am towing, with this trailer ready to camp at 8300lbs i am in 3/4 ton truck territory. That said the tundra has done surprisingly well and has never run out of power on any hills i have towed up. 6 speed tranny and 4:30 gears are whats helping that. I average 7.5-9mpg towing, this is what i would expect with any small block truck towing that size load. empty i have never seen above 16.5mpg.
I think all capable 1/2 tons have their pluses and minus' i had 15 years in a previous domestic brand and wanted a change.
this is my first toyota and a lot of people sold it up as the golden truck...its not and has had its share of growing pains. i've had the tailgate replaced, front axle and driveshaft. that aside i would buy another toyota as they have never hesistated to make things right.

2005 Titan 4wd Tow Pak:
8.2 mpg (worst mileage; towing in mountains)
20.9 mpg (best mileage; traveling flat interstate, no trailer)
14 mpg around town average
Hope this doesn't scare anybody!

I drive an '04 Titan and pull a Fleetwood Terry 26EX. The Titan does the job. I've towed from Atlanta to middle Florida, Alabama, South Carolina and even Chicago.
The Titan has a very roomy cab. My only complaint, if you could call it that, is that I chose the King Cab and a smaller bed. Next time, I'll take a longer bed. I don't need as much cab space as I am by myself or only one other person.
As far as gas mileage, I don't know the exact details. Each trip changes, the load in the truck and camper change. I would guess 5-10 while towing.
I do think about it, but don't obsess about it. If I have to obsess over every penny, maybe I shouldn't be camping.
