What the right thing to do when our small grill 1 lb propane gas canisters become empty? Seems a shame to just throw them away. Can they be refilled? Can they be recycled?

Best thing to do is to stop using them.
Get a small refillable "pony" tank...5 gal. and hook this to your portable grill. Works great, saves money, easy to transport and no land fill issues.

I've been refilling them for years. I have a couple that I've used since the last century, but I do keep a close check on them. I refill them from 20 lbs tanks. An adaptor cost less than $20.

When we tent camped, I picked up a Coleman propane tree to use with a 20lb tank. I looked at the small ones like posted above and empty they run $45 or more. I already had a spare 20lb tank. I put a lantern on top and ran a stove and grill from it.

With the popup and 5'er, I put an adapter on the camper tanks and just use the on-board propane from the camper. I keep a disposable around just in case.

Doesn't the cylinder give you any instructions? Lets see, the one I have says:

"Never refill this cylinder. Refilling may cause explosion."

Now there are a lot of guys around here that will tell you that it is safe to refill them, but for some reason, the manufacturer says different. What do I know anyway? It only takes one time for a accident to happen and I am on borrowed time, so I am not going to do any refilling!

Coleman now markets a "green key" that you insert into an empty 1 pound cylinder that allows it to be discarded as trash and not as hazardous waste. http://www.coleman.com/coleman/faq/faqreturn.asp?question=26

While not a perfect solution it will cut the cost of disposing of the empties.

Isn't it amazing that so many people think all those warnings do not apply to them!

Maybe the manufacturer doesn't want you to refill it because they want to sell you more. They somehow got the propane in the tank, didn't they?

I've never refilled a one pound bottle before. One time a propane company truck was in my neighborhood and I ask the guy to fill my 30 pound RV tank. He said they were not allowed to fill portable tanks from the truck anymore and that I would have to get it filled at their store. Safety reasons. So the way I see it, different ways of refilling can create different pressures. So a company is not going to say it's okay to refill their bottle not knowing by what means you will be refilling it. Would I refill a one pound bottle from another portable tank if I had an adapter?.....Yes.

Hi All.

I don't know about the rest of you RV'er's, but we gave up using the 1 lb propane bottles many many years ago. We started off with a 5 gal propane tank at first, then later just stayed with a 20 lb'er. The only propane burning items we have is our BBQ, and a Mr Heater. And if the Mr Heater isn't used, a 20 lb'er will last you a very very long time. We also have a Wave #6 Propane Heater as well, but that is plumbed into the RV's propane systen, as we never use our 5er's furance. So far, we have never ran out of propane. No Fuss, No muss, No Land Fill Issues. Good Luck. Happy Camping. Dan & Jill
