After reading countless posts and doing a good deal of research, we may (and may being the operative word here) have narrowed down our new fifth wheel choice to the Hitchhiker Champagne CKRSB or the Doubletree Select Suites 34RLSB3. It would help if I could get some weight, width, and actual length specs on the Select Suites. I have a current brochure and have perused the website at length, can't find what I need. If I am overlooking these specs, please let me know. We have come down to these two because they fit the bill closest to what we want. In truth, we'd really like a 30-32 ft. unit, but none of the manufacturers on our short list build one of these with at least 3 slides. I would love some feedback from any of you that own units similar to these. I know the HH floorplan is new for '09, don't know about the Select Suites. Also, what are your feelings on the side bath. We think we like the idea, but have not completely made up our minds. Also, how amenable are either of these manufacturers to doing a little customizing, anyone with experience in that arena? I would rather have a tub with shower than just the shower and a stackable washer/dryer rather than the combo. We would be most appreciative of any help you could give us.

Kindest Regards,
Susan

We have the HH,LS 04, UKTG 32.5 three slide. We love it. bought it new at the end of 03 and have not looked back. Few minor problems, but everything has worked itself out. We have used the HH Forum. There is a great wealth of knowledge there and plus HH monitors the site. Good luck on your choice and many years of safe traveling.

I will comment on the RSB portion of your question. We have always liked privacy and the RSB gives it to you. I never cared for the accordion door if your loved one is sleeping and you need to wash your hands. the are roomy but mine has no window, I don't know about this floor plan. They both are excellent choices but also look at customer care and how the manufacturer rate as far as service, warranty, and dealing with people and I don't think you will fin anyone better in that department than NUWA. They have their own forum and you can research it to get some feedback @ Nuwaowners.net

You asked about customizing the unit some. I remember from reading the HH forum and my own experience that HH is willing to do some customizing. Do not know what their limitations are but you can call HH direct or your dealer can and get the answer quickly.

Thanks so much for the replies. SweetLou, we also like the privacy that the side bath gives, just didn't know if the square footage you give up is worth it, am glad to hear you say it is. I am also glad to hear about the customizing, my greatest concern is the w/d situation, but there may be little that can be done about that with this particular floorplan. Factory support is also important and that will be important in our decision. As it stands, DH prefers the Mobil Suites and I am the HH fan. As I said I would love a smaller unit as I don't want the size of this thing to keep us from going to some of the really beautiful campgrounds, i.e. National Forests and Parks, as they are our favorites. Thanks again for your kind replies and I will go to the HH forum, do you know if there is one for Doubletree?

In looking at the floorplan for the Select Suites 34RLSB3 I would question if you can get into the bathroom with the bedroom slide in.

I too liked the SB or RSB concept but the more I look at real units instead of just floorplans I started having a few recurring concerns pop up. I haven't come across a RSB model amongst those I was interested in where you could access the bedroom area with the slide in. I measured a HH 329RSBDA and I would have had 9" between the bathroom wall and the slide to squeeze thru. I've seen others where you are met with a wall (the slide) and no room at all to get by. This may only be an issue if you would pull of at say a Cracker Barrel for the night and actually want to sleep in your bed. I just don't see putting your slides out as a great idea in those settings. I know people do, but those same people will one day be responsible for all of us being unwelcome anywhere of the like. The SB option doesn't block access to the bedroom or bathroom but it does have one issue which the RSB shares that I didn't care for. As a result of the necessary layout you have either the shower or toilet in the center of the coach and further forward which forces the drain pipe for such to drop right thru the center of your basement storage. That is a personal preference issue but I don't personally prefer that pipe blocking my basement the way it does.

If you haven't already spent time checking out both of these, with a tape measure if necessary to check any clearance issues that might concern you personally, I would do so at this point.

Good luck in your search and may you enjoy many years in whichever you choose.

Great comments, rob143, I will indeed look at this more closely. I have e-mailed Nuwa to see where I could see the unit of theirs in which our interest lies, local dealers don't have any '09's that I can find. I knew I would get some good feedback and am very grateful!

Thanks,
Susan

Roadrunner, we have been looking at 5th wheels for quiet a while as well and have come down to the same conclusions - HH and Doubletree. Doubletree also has their own forum that has tons of info and they are also willing to do some customization. We are leaning towards the Doubletree because of the manufactorer's statments regarding "built for extended stays." They have great insulation and we love the RL3 floor plan. I don't care for the side bath but have not had the open bath plan before to compare it to. Good luck and enjoy your new 5th wheel!

Thanks leahnrandy, I'll look into that forum as well, sometimes all the info is overwhelming, but if you don't take the time to explore all the avenues you may pay the price later and that still can happen, maybe just less often if you do your homework. Good luck to you on your purchase!

We have a HH Discover America with the CKRSB, but its a rear dining room. If the one you're looking at is the one I think it is, I'm jealous. We just LOVE the factory support from NuWa. Its second to none!
