Mine is on the inside of the box, on the drivers side, at the back of the truck. Very convenient spot!

Mine is in the left rear bed post. Provides for a quick and easy access.

What am I missing here?
I plugged my cord into the factory receptacle under the bumper next to the receiver hitch.
I have not had any problems so far.
Maybe it is because I have a short box?

You can do that, but most folks like not to have the cable hanging down and rubbing on the bodywork/tailgate etc. By having a plug inside the bed the cable is totally in the bed and much tidier. Also helps when you have a shorter cable from the fiver and it is a stretch to reach the plug down at the bumper hitch.
