The state park over the bridge is the Straits State Park. Wilderness State Park is our favorite. The pines loop is not on the water, but is more big rig friendly. Mackinac City is full of wonderful things to do. The tour of the fort is a must as is a trip to the island. Watch the Christopher Reeves/Jane Seymour film "Somewhere in Time" before your visit. You'll enjoy seeing the sites in the film. The horse and buggy tours are worth the price. You will have a wonderful trip!

It's going to be difficult to stay at any MI State Park around Mackinaw especially on weekends. If you can stay early during a week day, you might have a chance to reserve a few nights. Go online to see what's available at
We stayed at the Mackinaw City KOA in June, and were pleased. Lots of trees (and mosquitos) the wifi worked well if that's something you're interested in. Don't think you'll have a problem with the new 5th wheel we have a 37' ClassA with a toad, no problem.
Owner was very nice, we would stay there again. Sorry I can't help with anything else we were coming from Florida.
Mackinac Island was wonderful.

1) My first recommendation would be Mill Creek. People complain about being on top of people, just don't stay in that section! The ones that are cramped are the "bridge view" full hookups. Just avoid that seciton. As mentioned there are newer full hookups that are much larger and there are many water/electric sites that are huge if you can live without the sewer. We have one of those sites last year and I could turn my SUV around on the site without backing up it was so large. Here are some pics: Mill Creek Pics
So honestly, you can stay at Mill Creek and not be cramped easily.
2) Both state parks in the area are very nice. Wilderness is about 10 miles west of town and you'll feel like your 100 miles from town. Do check site size if you have a big rig though because many of the sites are more for tents and popups. Straights is on the other side of the bridge and it's also very nice. Again, check site size.
3) The KOA is actually pretty good. I typically don't like KOAs but this one is pretty shady and decent sized sites for the most part. It is older so if you're expecting a newer KOA this isn't it. But still kept up nice.
4) There are 3 others in the area that we visited but were not impressed with any of them.
Tee Pee, just not impressed at all. Actually felt more cramped then Mill Creek to me. But we didn't stay there.
North of the bridge was the one by Castle rock which seemed quite old and weedy. They did have a few decent lakeside sites but frankly didn't feel comfortable there.
Also north of the bridge going west off US 2 is Lakeshore Park. Great views but it's very run down. Small, very little shade and rocky. Not even sure if they had shower facilities. Scary.
good pics bonscott, thx for posting them. I have always heard the sites were tiny and ruled out staying there, now I may reconsider, the w/e sites look plenty big.
I'll second bonscott. We stayed in the full hookup bridge view sites and it was snug, but we loved the view. However, we saw many beautiful, large sites with w/e. Do bring your own commercial firepit unless you build tiny fires. They give you a small pan as a fire pit. If you're interested in the state parks, don't rule them out thinking you can't get a reservation. I just checked yesterday for the first week in Aug. and there were many sites available at the Straits State Park, for example.
