My husband and I are building a berm(earth covered on 3 sides) solar and wind generated house in the TN mountains. We will have no electric except what we produce. My husband will be designing our system and it will be very people friendly.
We have been fulltimers for over 3 years but now we want to make sure we have a safehaven for the future.
If anyone is interested I am posting the story with pictures on another forum. You can see our story at:

I hope you enjoy

I went to your website and saw the pictures of your property. Looks wonderfully idyllic, the view is gorgeous and that old barn looks like it is out of a movie set. I hope you continue to publish your progress in this website, about your home building and going off the grid experience.
I think this will be a fascinating project, not just for you and your husband, but for those following your story.

Or, you could tie into the grid and feedback power and save a lot of batteries?
Great idea that I will be doing if I ever build on my remote 5 acre camping spot.

WONDERFUL!!!! I've bookmarked your web page....we'll keep an eye on it! We've thought of the solar power and wind power, too! So far, because our home is established already, we'll be putting in a solar powered greenhouse!!!!

lesmore- thank you for the compliments.
JTMO- We can't sell power back in Tn. And you need a huge and very costly system to do that. We just want enough power for ourselves. We also have no incentives or rebates in TN for doing this.
Dshultz- I'm gald you are enjoying.
I also just posted the end of chapter 5 with more pictures. You can see them at:

We are on the grid but our electric bill for the last two months is $0 due to solar power. Love it.
Batteries take a lot of maintenance but I am sure you have read up on that part already. Good luck and have fun

Really good idea! DH and I have investigated solar, micro-hydro, and wind for our place in MO. Don't have to worry about losing power during the summer or during an ice storm that way. Only concern I have for wind is the stability of the tower during some of the storms we get. Will be following your odessey and wish you the best of luck!
