I plan on doing something similar on my Texas property in the future with wind and solar. I'll likely have a backup propane generator (as I'll have all propane appliances anyway). Cool!

Now that's the part that bugs me about "off grid" folks.
I'm on grid, and my power is dang near 100% domestic sourced. It's even 70% renewable (hydro). That's my heat and cooling, ALL appliances, refrigeration and water pumping.
Pretty much anytime people go "off grid" the appliances go propane. With the advent of good low voltage fridges, the refrigeration is less commonly propane, but many still do use absorption fridges. And they throw in a propane generator. Propane isn't domestic. Propane is relatively clean, but still a fossil fuel.

Hiker3- I'm sure there are a lot of people interested in camping out. We might rent out our old place(the one with our motorhome on it now).
Minkhill- Yeah I've seen hundreds of barns just like that. Where are you from?
MatthewB- Congrats on you energy conservation. We are not "going green" never claimed to. Just trying to conserve our "electric usage" because we will not be connected to the grid. Most people started going off grid long before "going green" became popular.
For anyone interested
I will be posting the first part of chapter 6 with more pictures tonight. Check it out at the City-Data forums in the TN section.
