We've had a Garmin C340 GPS for just over one year - yes, the warranty period is one year! . I used it last Wednesday and it was fine. Brought it into the house and hooked it to the wall adapter for charging. Today, I was simulating a route, as I've done countless times before, and the GPS went haywire. Even after resetting, it tells me that the system software is missing and the map software is missing as well. The download from Garmin's site doesn't work, and trying to load the map software via the supplied DVD doesn't work either.
It really bothers me that the unit is only 8 days out of warranty, i.e. it was purchased on June 21/07!! Has anyone had any warranty dealings with Garmin? Any suggestions as to getting the unit up and running again?
Call Garmin tech support at 1-800-800-1020. I lost the audio on my Nuvi 660 and not only did they repair it, but they also sent me the unit back with the latest '08 map software on it. Talk to them about warranty status.

Hope you have as good a luck as GSF had, I got a Dingy that didn't know as much about it as I did, which was next to nothing. When I explained I could enter an address the Garmin accepted it, but didn't know how to get there. When through other means (asking directions) we arrived at destination, the little checkered flag was displayed with fan fare. So the dingy explained in great detail how I could block an address out and the Garmin would ignore it. So again I explained to him that I didn't need to block out an address, I just needed to get to one. In the end I was told to take it to a repair shop (as if one could be found around here). This was after a trip to ONT. We had the street pilot for a year, but that trip was the first and last time I'll bother using it.
Actually I've determined the map is so out of date it's just about useless. In a town of about 16,000 pop. my unit recognizes only 2 highways but won't recognize an address on them. Now when I plan a trip I use Google to locate a destination, then print a map of it. A book of maps is a little bulkier but much more accurate.
Anyway best of luck and I pray you have more success than I had with them. If buy another GPS it won't be a Garmin, that's for sure

The screen on my Street Pilot 2610 wouldn't calibrate. Not only was it out of warranty, it was out of production. Called Garmin with the problem and they advised me to send it in to them. Got it back in 10 days repaired, updated, and NO charge... handled under warranty. I recently gave it to a friend and replaced it with another Garmin c-550 with more features and the high sensitivity receiver. When it comes to customer support after the sale, I'm a Garmin fan.
I too had a street pilot screen blackout, 6 months out of warranty, and they repaired it free of charge,...trouble is it only lasted 6 months till the screen blacked out again, and then free repair was refused. The other thing about Garmin, the software is 4 yrs old before I ever get them. But like an idiot I just keep right on buying Garmin,.....probably because of price, and other brands ain't much better.

Thanks for all the responses! I called the 1-800 number and spoke to a pleasant guy in the "automotive" section who immediately told me that the warranty would be honored. He transferred me to a software support specialist who tried very hard to install the files in the GPS, via my computer, remotely. Unfortunately, that didn't work as there must be a hardware problem. So tomorrow morning, the GPS will be sent off to Garmin's Canadian service depot in Quebec. I'll be hoping for the best. I'll let you all know how everything turns out when I get the GPS back.
Well, I promised to report on our GPS saga, which ufortunately is continuing. As directed by Garmin in Kansas, I sent the defective C340 to the Canadian repair facility in Montreal. After one month, I phoned them to find out what was happening, and I was told that they couldn't fix it, but would send a replacement C340. It arrived last week, and it is "different" than my old one...bizarre directions and bizzare instructions when "re-calculating". So I'll be phoning Garmin tomorrow morning with the customary two-hour call to see what can be done. BTW, the replacement unit has only a three-month warranty
So at this point, we're not "happy campers" and are very disappointed in Garmin.
