With the strict diesel emissions and high diesel fuel price I would think they lost the cost advantage from years ago.

See epa mileage estimates for the diesels here. Not really that much better than the more fuel efficient gassers. IMHO with the price differential of diesel these days, these dont look nearly as attractive as they once did.

Did you look at the numbers?? What fuel efficient gassers are you comparing them to? I don't know of any that are the size of the Jetta and getting 30mpg city and 40mpg highway. Add to this the TD VW's actually have some performance to go with that 30-40 mpg

I agree with that.

My question is, what happened to the 50 to 60 mpg we were hearing about for the new Jetta TDI clean diesel?? 40 is a far cry from 60

Possibly, though I didn't know EPA had changed their methods in the last few months??? I was figuring maybe the engine became a victim of too much emmission equipment, like the trucks have become victims of already.

a co workers 99 TDI jetta is getting better than 40 but Id say in 2008, 60mpg out of one of these is still a dream.

One very positive thing about this new 50 state diesel that VW has come up with in the Jetta, is that it does not require urea injection, or a urea reservior as the Blue Tec Daimler diesels do.

I understand that the Urea liquid doesn't have to be added that often with Mercedes/Daimler's Blue Tech, as it is very minutely injected during engine running, though. Those Blue Techs will go a lot of miles before the Urea tank needs refilling. Hopefully this Urea substance/liquid will not be too costly when needed.

I think that Dodge will be taking advantage of the Blue Tech diesel emissions system via Daimler, as Daimler still has a minority interest in Chrysler, and there is still technology transfer happening between the two companies.

I know of no Japanese vehicle manufactures that have a diesel engine that meets the requirements for all 50 states as VW does.

My wife's gets about 40 with mixed driving, 45+ all highway. Some diesels go together better than others and you'll find a few guys getting 60+ mpg out of the early 2000s VWs. Check out Fred's TDI club for more info.
