We own an 06 jetta tdi with 6 speed dsg tranny. 45k miles on it & my wife avgs 38 - 42 mpg around town & on a recent trip at 65 mph we got 61 mpg !!! The car cost us 21.5 k new they are selling on ebay for 20k plus, it has never been to the dealer so I think we made a wise choice. I don't no of any gas car that has this value & at 5.09 per gal, 38 mpg it costs us 0.135 cents per mile, not too bad. Very soon I will be making my own biodiesel, somewhere between b50 - b75, that should help the commute & the trips with the toyhauler. A b50 blend brings the price down enough to make a few extra trips bringing along an extra 100 gals in the tank in the bed & 40 gals more in the toyhauler tank. Also, we just got an 08 maxima & my wife drives the jetta 2 to 1 , it is just a great everyday driver.

Did you look at the numbers?? What fuel efficient gassers are you comparing them to? I don't know of any that are the size of the Jetta and getting 30mpg city and 40mpg highway. Add to this the TD VW's actually have some performance to go with that 30-40 mpg I agree with that.
My question is, what happened to the 50 to 60 mpg we were hearing about for the new Jetta TDI clean diesel?? 40 is a far cry from 60
Wife's TDI Golf gets 55mpg highway 50 combined.
My Jetta TDI gets 45mpg highway 40 combined.
I don't see any gassers even close.
Friend has Honda gasser. Gets 33MPG highway and paid more for the Honda then I did for my Jetta.

You can't go by the EPA ratings for diesels. The EPA has even stated themselves that their tests are not accurate for diesels, and are off by about 20% from what it does in the real world.

Wow!..........After reading this.........I must go out and buy a gasoline hybrid for $10k over it's subcompact equivalent that gets maybe 5-7 MPG's less............NOT!
Those MPG numbers for your diesel Jetta are fantastic!
I think that diesel pump prices are going to drop down to being closer or below gasoline prices in the future too. There's absolutely, no plausible excuse or reasoning for diesel prices to be so inflated above unleaded gasoline. Heating oil demand can't be used as an excuse unless the Midwest is enduring a sub-zero cold snap in July.
Also California and it's 16 Stepford states that copy it will get this diesel too. That will give a big boost to diesel powered cars in the U.S., as these states that normally "kill" diesel car sales for the rest of the states can't say that CARB declared them unfit for their states.

Source, please.
Because that's not stated anywhere that I can find, not even the EPA's own website:
http://fueleconomy.gov
Or the page where they talk about diesels:

The Golf is going back to it's original name, the Rabbit.

I've got an 06. I drive fast and then do a lot of idling when I get to where I am going. I average 38. I think that is the worst that you can get with it. My wife has averaged upper 50s on an all freeway trip.
Also it is fun to watch people freak out when you put diesel in it. I tell them I heard cars get better milage on diesel.

The Golf is going back to it's original name, the Rabbit. Ummmm.. I think that will be a big marketing mistake to name a Golf diesel as a Rabbit. Too many people still remember the smelly gutless diesel rabbits of the 80's...
I would have a hard time getting myself to buy it if they name it Rabbit, but named Golf or GTI, I could see myself buying one.
