I have a 2007 Tundra and a 2 horse bumper pull trailer (6000 lbs loaded). I recently bought a pop up truck camper that weights 1,090 lbs dry. I took the combination on a weekend trip without problems. However, the truck was certainly not level. I even had to take up some links in the tow chains so they wouldn't drag. I had 34 gallons of water in the camper and a generator on board. Next time I will forget all the water in order to save weight. I realize I should have bought a 3/4 ton truck. I would lose too much money by selling the Tundra in today's market. Is there anything I can do to the truck to level the rear end? Any suspension upgrades? Or should I just get my friend to tow my trailer with his truck and I'll take just the camper?

Put some air bags on the truck to keep it level and hit the road.
Trading in today's market would not be a wise idea. With truck sales the way they are, your either wouldn't find a buyer or not get enough out of your truck.

Cruise on over to the truck camper forum and do a search on horse trailers. You might not get the exact answer you're looking for, but I bet you come close. If not you might try asking some of those that have gone the same route you've taken.

I would suggest Air Bags on the tow vehicle too

And/or a load equalizing hitch on the trailer..

I've seen a lot of light weight pop ups that are very heavy in the tong

But I've yet to see one of the "less than a ton" trailers where I could not LIFT the tong.. and that horse trailer. if properly loaded, could put 400-600 pounds on your hitch.. and I can't lift nearly that much.

Air bags will help but overloaded is overloaded so check and make sure you aren't exceeding the axle rating or the rating on your tires.

What is the cargo rating on the Tundra? Something like 1,300#?

The trailer has gotta have around 800# of tongue weight, the camper weighs another 1,400# minimum when loaded with your stuff. How many people in the cab?

I could be off, but it sounds to me like you are closing on being at DOUBLE your rated cargo weight on the truck. Airbags aren't going to fix that.

The rating on the Tundra is around 1,700. There are 2 people in the cab. So I get 350 (people), 1,400 camper and gear (no water), and the 800 tongue weight for 2,550 lbs. The rear axle rating is 4100, front is 3900. I only plan to use the complete rig maybe for one 200 mile round trip once a month. With this low mileage, is this still too much of a problem? Would a hitch extension and something like a Timbren SES help any? Thanks

Have your buddy tow the trailer.

Timbren SES, helper springs, or airbags, any one will help with border line or maybe a little overweight, but, you are looking at almost 1000 lbs over. Even a 3/4 ton short bed would be a stretch with the payload you are looking for. I've been looking at an F250 supercab (4X4), with short bed, and it's payload is listed at 2350 lbs. That's still 200 lbs short of what you're looking at (without water and generator).

Maybe, instead of trading the truck, you might consider trading the TC and trailer for a horse trailer with living quarters.
