I have owned lots of cars/vans with fuel injection. when they start they just sit there and idle smoothly. This ford with 36000 miles bucks, snorts, idles rough and dies unless I press the excellerator. Then after a few minutes it will idle OK. and run smoothly..any ideas??

I Just ordered an OBDII code reader. hople that will show me where to start. usually do my own work, mechanics here get $100 per hour!! If I have to take it in, I will but after I know I cannot repair it myself!

It could be a faulty throttle position sensor.

I will bet the air bypass valve is dirty and sticking or sometimes called idle speed control valve. It will sometimes cause hard starting and idle problems you should be able to remove it and clean it .

I believe your 1997 F53 460 is OBDI. That is what mine is. OBDII was not installed on Ford's F53 until 1999 with the V10's. Like "gm seller" said, sounds more like an idle control valve problem to me also. Mine always starts and idles fine, even when the temperature is very cold here in the Colorado winters. Never had a problem with cold starting or idling.

Temp sensor? Maybe it thinks its warmer than it is and is not richening the mixture enough. Once it warms up a bit its fine.

The 460 EFI Fords are infamous for having bad fuel pumps. They have changed the design to a turbine instead of the diaphram. Fuel pressure will be in the low 30's with the old pump; high 30's, low 40's with the new one. The pressure is readable at the OBD connector. (I think). Rough idling isn't ususally how the symptom surfaces but I would start there.
