Or you can go buy the latest technology in WiFi. It is the 802.11N. I had the opportunity to test this Wireless-N technology using a Linksys WUSB-300N WiFi card. I was amazed that it found 9 more WiFi routers in the area over my old card. You might want to wait a little while however because, although it is available, the Wireless-N technology in still in the Draft stage.

There is nothing that you can plug in to extend the range of the built in wifi adaptor. You have to disable that one and plug in a seperate wifi adaptor - typically a USB device with the ability to add an external antenna to it.

There is a useful thread here

Check out this High power USB adapter from ALFA

I use one at work and connect with a hot spot (since my work is to cheap to provide high speed internet) approx 1 mile from the office. I do use a 12 foot USB extender cable to place the ALFA adapter in the window. When I get the chance I am going to build or purchase a high gain antenna that can be added to this adapter since it has a RP-SMA threaded jack for a external antenna.

It also has the realtek 8187 chipset which works right out of the box for Linux applications such as Ubutu and Slax, Back Track Live Cd for Pentesting

I have 3 or 4 other external USB Wifi Adapters and by far this one kicks the other ones back to like using cheap kids walkie talkies for range and sensitivity.

Just get an Airlink 802.11n USB adapter and plug it into USB port.
Turn off built in WiFi and hang adapter as high as possible with 6 ft. cable. Don't pay more than 20 bucks for the Airlink!

Hey MrWizard --  how did you determine the focal point on that contraption? If you did and mounted it on your batwing antenna for height and pointing you might get some pretty good results.
