The cost of gas has many people driving slower. This hurts the highway robbers as they don't get to write as many speeding tickets. So the solution is to lower the limit to something ridiculously low enough to create lots more "criminals".
I'm driving slower, but lowering the limit in the name of "safety" is just as bogus as it was in the '70s.

UPDATE...
Tried driving slower over a 500 mile trip I took this week. Slowed from my usual 70 mph down to 60. According to my onboard computer my mileage went from 6.4 to a whopping 6.9. I saved so much I'm buying a mansion and a yacht...

This week we took a 300 mile trip over primarily flat terrain but one section was rolling hills. Normally I get 8.3 MPG running 65 MPH @ ~1800 RPM in 6th gear. On this trip I ran 60 MPH @ ~1600 RPM in 6th gear and got 9.4 MPG. I know it's a relatively short test but was certainly an eye opener. I have a 1500 mile trip coming up and plan on running 60 to confirm the MPG increase.

I've always driven my coach slow to save fuel, but mainly to save us and others. I've never been able to figure out how some feel that it's just as safe to drive a motel as fast as a car. The only others I know are truck drivers who obviously think they can handle and stop their rigs as well as a BMW. I, on the other hand, have driven both and can easily tell the difference.
By the way, it's not against the law in every state I know of to drive at 45 or 50mph and statisticly, there's been very few accidents because someone was driving a motorhome too slow.

Just drove 3400 miles from CA to the Dakotas and back. I tried staying at around 57mph. Enjoyed the slower pace, but out of the 3400 miles there was probably only 2 where the wind wasn't blowing or I was going up or down a hill. When it is hilly, I found that 60mph in 6th was a little more comfortable as the rig didn't shift down as much.
My long term average has been 7.3mpg at around 65mph. I averaged 8.2 on this trip. I actually found I enjoyed the 57mph tho as it seemed more relaxing. I find the journey is as enjoyable as the destination.
