We are leaving for Alaska July 1st in a rented class C. We start leave Redondo Beach and plan to drive to Fairbanks? We rented the MH for 2 months.

As we non rush, I will find out fast if this is/was enough time to do it right. Also, since this is a big purchase "for us" renting a class C will helps us deicide if we would like to buy Class A or a 5th wheel. We plan to live in it 6 months a year or more. We have the Milepost in hand.

Any advice you may have sure wont hurt.

Spent 95 days in Alaska in 2004. A good buy is the toursaver book. You can buy it on line at toursaver.com. you get 2 for 1 discounts on many attractions. We saved over $900 and did some things we could not have afforded if not for the book. The book costs $99.
If you email me, I will send you our daily log if you are interested. Have a good trip.

Try stopping by Liard Hot Springs on your way up - nothing like a good hot soak after a long day sitting! Very scenic place, too. Make sure you have lens protectors on your headlights - thrown rocks can shatter them and there's lots of gravel around. Don't forget that planes have right-of-way on highways to land and try to have somewhere to pull off in mind. Take atleast two spare tires and/or cans of fixaflat. Don't go too fast as the frost heaves will beat you to death. Don't leave the car to photograph the animals! Enjoy the trip - Alaska is a great place and the drive up and back constitute a good part of it.

I would say hurry to get up there and stay as long as you can and hurry back at the end. You can easily get back to the places in the lower 48 you have to speed by now. We spent 11 weeks on a trip from CA in summer '88 and were able to see nearly everything accessible by paved road, and a lot that wasn't, including some ferry rides to Sitka, Juneau, Petersberg, Ketchican, and Wrangel. If you plan it right you can get a lot done.
Can't wait to go back for a whole summer again!

As to renting an RV first, that is a great idea. You'll find out if you can live in a small space and in close proximity to each other. I hope you'll LOVE it.

Don't forget this is a rental.

Just be sure you get their insurance or be sure yours covers a rental.

In 1999 we took multiple car & trailer spare tires and not a one came off the top of the car.

In some places the state bird (skeeters) can be bad so take plenty of repellent.
