The reason to get one? Peace of Mind .. how much is that worth? Have run into too many places where the pedestals were questionable, so now plug in the surge protector then plug the TT into the surge protector.

I agree with Dixon....cheap insurance (for the coverage) that you only have to pay for once.
We are all good at something.....
I just happen to be a good bad example.

We wouldn't go anywhere without one. We've installed a Surge Guard in our previous TTs, an AEC Electrical Protection System in our DP and a Progressive Industries EMS HW 30C in our new TT. While we've never experienced a major surge that would have damaged electrical equipment, we have had many occasions when the system warned us of electrical problems in the park.
The Surge Guard is the only one of the 3 that is NOT available with a remote--a serious disadvantage IMO. With a remote I can monitor the voltage, Hz and current as well as bypass the low-voltage shut-off when necessary.

I notice there is a wide range of prices. How do I know which one I need. I have 30a and don't want to go overboard on something. Just the basic protection.

I don't feel this is an issue. The SG monitors the power constantly, if conditions are out of range it shuts off power to the RV and continues monitoring the supply line until voltage comes back in check, only then will it restore power, so I see no reason for a remote control when the unit takes care of everything. I also don't understand why you would want to bypass a low voltage shut off warning? I trust my SG as it has earned my trust through several occasions when I could have lost everything. I highly recommend it to anyone.

NCHornet1, You mention a lightning strike, but I don`t see on the paperwork that it specifically mentions lightning and that surprised me because that`s one main reason I bought mine. It says it will shut down for and overvoltage after 8 seconds, but in the case of lightening, isn`t that about 7.9999999999999 seconds too late? Even for a minor surge 8 seconds is a long time. I guess I can`t argue with success, but it doesn`t sound right to me. I thought a lightning arrestor had to be labled TVSS or similar (transient voltage surge suppressor).

Mosseater - The 8 second time delay of the SurgeGuard is for an under or over voltage condition with the campground power supply. This is not the same as surge protection, which will cause a nearly instantaneous trip.
Imcclure - The $69 SurgeGuard at CW is a simple surge protector only. It does not provide protection for under and over voltage conditions. There's a reason for one being more expensive than the other.
