Is this worth a stop? We will be driving from Pocatello, ID to West Yellowstone, MT and that should only take a few hours. I was thinking of a side trip to Craters of the Moon NM and I was wondering if it was worth driving a few hours out of our way.

IMHO,yes it would make an interesting side trip. Interesting rock formations. Also a lot of beautiful scenery in that area.

It might not be for everyone, but I find it quite interesting. Then too, I can't pass an opportunity to visit one our wonders of nature.

Craters of the Moon is a very interesting place. You will have about a 1.75 hour drive from Pocatello. I would allow a minimum of 4 hours at the Craters of the Moon. You can easily spend a full day and not see 10% of the site. In July and August it will be very warm. Have good hiking shoes as the lava rock is very abrasive and will put some serious wear on your shoes. Some of the better sites will require walking. I would say it is worth the time to see.
Here is another item near the Craters. Near the intersection of US 26 and US 20
about 20 miles East of Arco on US 26 there is a Registered National Historic Landmark where the first nuclear power plant that powered Arco, Idaho with nuclear power is located. The site is on your route and worth the time to visit. The site is not well marked but when you know where to look you should find it OK.

This is extremely accurate advice in every respect. If you are coming from the south, you can exit I-15 at Blackfoot take 26 (excellent road) out to Craters and then return using 33 to Rexburg (also an excellent road). Normally there is little traffic on either route and I like the views--wide open spaces. Enjoy.

Yes, I would recommend a Stop at Craters of the Moon. Take a short hike and enjoy one of the popular caves.

Looks like we all agree. Craters of the Moon is deffinately worth a stop. There is a nice little visitors center there and the area is really unique.

There are also a few camp sites there. First come first served.
It's worth the trip if you enjoy exploring natural wonders.

Both Craters of the Moon and the Experimental Breeder Reactor are worth seeing. Take one of the hikes through a lava tube.
