I feel for the retired on a fixed income who had to take there CD down from 5.4 percent to 3 percents so the gov. could give it to bail out people who wasted it away(subprime) on to much toy and saved nothing so when they get to retirement they won't have any saving to help out like the folk who are on it now trying to do with what they have to get by.

If you had two hundred thousand in Cd's and now you get 2.4 % less per year, you now get $6 thousand dollars per year, not $10.800 per year, who got the $4,8000, a loser who couldn't buy within there means.

2005 Chev 5.3 Supercharged 395HP 425 T hp. Two wheels on front, 2 on back. one seat, tint windows. front and rear bumpers, headlights, windows. Door on each side. Heater, floor mats, junk behind seats, some dirt. Pulls so hard.

But now, by your own thinking, you are acting like the guy that last year got 10,800 per year is a loser because now he is only getting 6,000. Last year he was within his budget, but not this year.

The gov. took his money by droping prime very low and gave it to a loser, and did it without asking him.

A construction work can see bad times coming a year or two out.
The retired are at the mercy of congress and we know what they are like.

Did you see fuel prices goin up this fast? Did you see the rv and auto industry going into the tank? I suppose you saw Enron taking all those people's pensions.

There is no seeing 2yrs in advance. Jobs that where scheduled yrs in advance got cancelled. Not just by the fuel costs, do you have any idea was is going on with steel prices? Refineries are not shutting down to do the same maint. they used to. Heaven forbid they loose that two week profit to keep the systems safe.

I stepped out of buying land, house's, pickups, and more over two years back, the hand writing was on the wall the party was about over. The musical was about to stop, jobs, land, housing, pickups is over for a long time. Go back a year and half or more and read my posts, I was talking about it while guys like you were laughing at me.

I agree with Supercharged. Being a college student, the job prospects at this time in the present economy are poor in my chosen field (Finance), but the present economy has taught me one valuable lesson.

That is: "Making payments on an expensive house and expensive toys does not a rich man make."

I look around every day and see friends and family going bankrupt, cars being repo'd, etc.

I used to think these hot shots had it made, driving around in a crew cab diesel truck, living in the nicest of neighborhoods, and towing around fancy double outboard offshore fishing boats.

Now I am able to see the other side of the coin. All these guys are just one missed payment away from their life to come crashing down. For many of them, it already has, others are just barely holding on.

I know some people that have made over $100,000 in their careers, and now live on social security, as they saved nothing. At least they looked good for their friends for a little while!

wow! must be some millionaires on board. how do you plan for everything around you going up in price!? food, fuel, utilities, education, taxes, insurance cuts, medical bills, basic necessities and no raises? you cant even sell anything now to get money back out of it cause its a buyers market? i am fortunate, i make good money. and i can afford my toys. but people are struggling right now like never before. i dont know of any pack rats that made 100,000 a year and saved every red cent. you put cash away for a rainy day......well the rainy day has turned into a rainy year.

In reply to the topic, I am seeing just as many RVs and Boats on the road now as in previous years, and we have some of the highest fuel prices in the country. On the other hand I also see more smaller cars and less traffic on the roads during commute hours. More people are taking public transit or carpooling.. More motorcycles on the road also.

Perhaps it is simply that people have found other ways to keep costs down so they can still afford to play on the weekends.

As far as those on fixed income? This is really not a retirement community here in Santa Rosa, Ca.. Many sell their homes at great profit and move somewhere else to retire. I plan on doing that myself in about 5 years. I bought it here 20 years ago.. You can do the math. In the mean time, my cost of living is low enough compared to my income that I can afford to take my TT out for a road trip whenever we want to. Everything is paid for.

IMO the Op is right on target. Many out there are more concerned about their appearance rather than enjoying life. When its all said and done the ones who lived within their means and were able to "blend" comfort/practicality/affordability will, and do prevail.

I don't need $250 shades to hide behind, blackberry, designer******made in a country that is destroying us. Do I look impressive.....nobody is looking anyway! Learn from our elders rather than expect them to have $$$ for you when they pass away.

We see the ones (whiners) with their big homes, (big mortage) lots of toys, etc going 80 MPH tailgating in their BIG suv (lone traveler)....I just put on the cruise control and ignore them.

My housepayment is a low 3 digit. Needs and wants have lost their order in many peoples agenda. I can travel, stay where I wish, eat well, and relax while doing so.........the worst part of the journey are the whiners playing a role they cannot afford and failing to accept responsibility for their actions. Get over it.

Whose fault is it going to be when you retire and alpo is your dinner. BTW...we are single income family and have put one through college with the next nearly done. Your house may be bigger, your car(s) newer and your ego blooming but your days are numbered....whose fault will it be when your new car is being taken away at 2 am?

America has had a wakeup call and most do not get it. I still see big gas hogs with no plates on them? We are not here to support mega corporations and it is not their fault that we do so. Blame is not easy to take but often you must in order to make change.

Oh did I tell you about my dogs...they love our house!

I was reading an article about name brand toddlers shoes, sixty and a hundred bucks for shoes that will fit for about two months!

My bachlor cousin says we need a good recession to bring people to their senses.
I am beginning to believe he is right.
