I'm considering buying an 08 2500 HD duramax to tow my 22.5 ' travelaire fifth wheel. I'm towing it now with a 94 silverado with some difficulty. As this will be my only vehicle I'd like to get an idea of what mileage to expect when not towing.
The fifth wheel gvw is 6400 pounds and most of my towing will be in the Rocky mountains. What axle ratio might be recomended?

Way over kill for a 6400 lb. trailer, but a fun truck nonetheless. The turbo will make short work of the Rocky Mts. and at altitude. I think your only choice is 3.73 for the rear end. At least that was the case when I bought ours.
Mileage: as usual it depends on how you drive. I have seen 22 on the freeway, 13 stop and go around town and about 15 maybe a little better in mixed driving.

By the way, welcome to the Forum.

what they said

you shouldn't see a decrease in performance until you get over 10,000 feet.

I have an 03 DMAX. The best milage I have seen unloaded was 24.5 mpg. I was heading for southern Indiana and drove through Chicago about 10 am ( not the tollroad through Chicago on I94) I hit it just right no traffic and no contruction and rolled through all the way to Indy with out taking the truck off of cruise. My back and forth work trips range any where from 20-22mpg. I have a 22ft HILO camper it weighs loaded at 5000 lbs the best towing has been 20 mpg . I just got back from a 600 mile round trip and got 19 mpg. I drive sedately. I am always within 5 miles an hour of the speed limit and stay to the right. I always use cruise. This truck likes 87 mile an hour so cruise is always on.

I don't seem to get any better mileage than I did with my 02 Sierra with a 5.3 litre. My current truck is an 05 2500 Sierra with a Duramax. I still seem to get only about 17mpg empty and about 12 towing a 28 ft Terry. I try to keep it between 60 to 70 mph.

I've seen 23 highway at 60mph 18.5 mixed and 14 pulling about 6000 lbs.

Hi Ian:
Have you compared the Canuck price for your truck with the American Price for the same vehicle? A friend of mine had an '08 Silverado Duramax 1 ton with about every option available priced out in California early this year--$42-43K. Same unit here over $60K. Everything was fine with the purchase at the dealership until the order hit General Motors who informed the dealer they could not sell a new vehicle to a Canadian! I saw many newspaper ads in the Pheonix area in January and February for "in stock" new Duramax's in the mid $30's. I don't have a problem paying a higher price at home but 50%+ higher?? I think my '02 will be here for a while.
Radar.

Just got back from our first "serious" tow with our new truck. I must say, this truck is a pleasure to tow with! Makes the drive so much easier than my previous truck. We averaged about 13 mpg, very little freeway driving, mostly 2 lane highway with varied terrain! You will not even be aware you have your trailer in tow until you check the rear-view!

Best of Luck!

With 7000 miles on the truck, the best I've seen empty is 16 mpg (mostly city driving...no freeway driving to work)

I have an 06 and best I have ever got empty was 21. but most of the time it is more like 19. On a flat interstate I get the better milage. I pull a lot heavier rig and only get 10. Even if I pull my 18 ft utility trailer with little weight I get 15 and over all mix driving empty I get between 16-17

Love the truck and drive a lot. It was 2 years old in april and have 75,000 miles.

Thanks for the info guys.
Maybe I should consider the 5.3 gas instead?
