We are new to camping and I've only been to 5 campgrounds in the state. Any MI natives or even others that camp in Michigan, I'd love to hear your thoughts on campgrounds you like.

One of our favorite spots in the fall is Kalkaska Campground. Nice mom and pop place. Wooded lots and very nice bathrooms, close to town also.

Last Memorial Day the DW and I stayed at Harrisville State Park. It's a bit of a drive from where we are (Just North of Detroit) but the surrounding area, Tawas, Oscoda and the National Forest just to name a few attractions were beautiful.

Fair grounds at Escanaba, Allegan, Ionia, Charlotte, Harrison, West Branch, Coldwater, Certreville, and West Branch. All have nice large camping areas, restrooms, good power, water, some have sewers too. They all have dump stations and some of the best price camping.

Timber Ridge is nice if you're looking for the Full Service type of campground.

If you're looking for more of a out of the way drycamping experience, check out the Two Hearted River Campground which is right at the mouth of the Two Hearted River where is meets Lake Superior.

You can kayak/canoe from up river right back to your campsite! Awesome fishing on the river too.

Then there is Bond Falls which is a slice of Heaven. Way up in the U.P. over by the Porkies. Again, it's drycamping, but the scenery is so worth it.

The campgrounds in the Porcupine Mountains are excellent also. Some have hook-ups while some are drycamping. Right on Superior and hikable to many of the trails in the Park. This is the only time we've ever seen wild wolves in our life.

Leaving the Porkies one morning we spotted two wolves along the edge of the road. What an awesome sight.

Ludington State Park is another great site. Busy, but has a lot to offer. Fun for the whole family

Here is a link to our Campground Reviews Page for Michigan.

We're headed back there right now for the summer, so we'll let you know some more as we camp in our home state more.

The state parks in Algonac and Lakeport are nice, as is the one at Higgins Lake as long as you can live without sewer or water hookups. Also, if you like more scenery with fewer amanities, try some of the U.S. Forest Service campgrounds up north. No sewer, water or even electricity at the sites, but beautiful scenery - usually on a lake or river, and very reasonably priced. Usually self registration.

We live in the U.P. and enjoy Wells State Parks in Cedar River, Indian Lake State Park near Manistique, there are a few county campgrounds in Escanaba that are very nice. There is a great state park on Lake Superior called Lake Muskellunge. I guess it depends where in MI you live. I don't know if you would want to travel too far into the U.P. if you live in the Lower Peninsula.

Mackinaw Mill Creek near Mackinaw City. The view of `the bridge' is for camera buffs.
