I have been thinking about next winter and what we should do. If the price of fuel keeps it upwards trend I’m not sure what we will do. On the one hand we are retired and only have so many years that we can do this. On the other hand because we are on the preverbal fixed income how can we afford it?

I just came from the dentist with some bad news that I think I can turn into somewhat good news. He tells me I have 3 crowns that I need at $1,200 each, and my wife needs 1. I told my wife that we should head to Yuma, AZ next winter and go over to Mexico and have our teeth done there. The money we save will pay for the extra fuel.

Anyone have a good dentist they would suggest?

My crowns cost $500 part paid by Insurance.
I think a trip to Mexico is in your future.

That is a long time to wait to get dental work done if you need it now - unless you are just joking, of course. If not - have you considered going to the nearest university dental school where the dental students will do it for a discount. The professors supervise the whole thing, so you get good work.

Just a thought!

I had asked my Dentist to give me a time table and budget on what work both my wife and I need. With him we are working on a three year plan to do the work. We're not in hurry, a good suggestion on the dental school. We would be interested in knowing the experience of others for both options; students working on you or having work done in Mexico, I understand these Dentist have been trained in the US.

My DW had a root canal and two crowns for the total of $563.00 in Mexico outside of Yuma last year. Excellent job !! The Dentist name is Maria Gonzales . I did not have the guts to have a crown done there so I waited until I got back to Calif for a lot more money

If you elect to go to a dental school, take along a good book as the waiting time for the professors to approve "the next step in the process" can be long.

My appointments were generally over a two day period. 1-5 the first day and 9-12 the next. Since I had family in the area, I could visit them when I wasn't "in the chair."

Of course, I always wondered why those dental professors were there at the school and not out in the real world earning those big bucks.

You make a good point, but for starters the professors don't have the same demanding daily schedules as "real world" dentists who are out there making the big bucks, the profs get lots of time off, perks and other benefits, plus tenure and retirement, plus - think about it - ALL of the dentists who are out there making the big bucks now - were at one time - trained by the very same professors, were they not? That is how they got to be out there to start with. So if you trust the dentists out there now - why not trust them when they are in training and under the supervision of an entire faculty of specialists?

Yes - there is a downside - the waiting time - but for those who need good work done at a much less expensive rate, it is not a bad way to go, especially if one is near a university dental school and has the extra time to spare.

Either option would seem to work for the OP. I personally would take the dental school route if I was near a university dental school, but that is just me.

Any address or phone number on Maria Gonzales? We need to head that way for some work as well! While at VCU in Richmond VA we patronized the dental school and they were very good, very thorough, and affordable, and I would suspect that other schools are also.

What do you do if you have a provblem with the dental work AFTER you get back home? Since you can't go back to the Mexican dentist, what will it cost to repair any problems?
