I'm going to try this again!
I can't get this to submit. If it doesn't work this time I'll give up for a while.
The retirement clock is beginning to tick so I'd like to ask a question.
Retirement ETA 14 years 8 months. Hubby and I bought our first travel trailer now that the boys are grown. It's on a piece of land with running water and power. We also have a shed. The plan is to upgrade in time and live in central Minnesota 5 months out of the year. It's the other half of the year we are completely at a lost for.
I've been doing research on doing the same thing in New Mexico for the winter months but everything so far looks really spendy. An RV and a little piece of land to put it on is pretty much it.
So far the plan is to sell the house and our current life style and think twice about giving the boys our cell phone numbers and RV for as long as possible. Is this making sense? Is this a pipe dream?

Welcome! No pipe dream... I have a sign in my RV Wish it, Dream It, Do It.
Love the unlisted cell phone idea!
Sure you will get lots and lots of replies and ideas. We own a lot in a RV resort in FL and have traveled when we wanted to. One lot is all I want to own. The rest of time when we aren't here, I would rather choose different places to go and see more of the US, even if it meant staying one season in one state, the next season in a different state. That's the beauty of a RV.

With 14 years out before retirement time, you should actually focus your efforts and thought processes on money management and savings for retirement. While your plan may be viable today, in 14 years it could make no sense at all.

The money part is already figured out. That's what prompted this plan of action. We have a tendancy to live way below our means.

I'm with wayne tw - you may be too far out to make specific plans right now. Keep saving, we've always lived below our means too, and now we're both retired. Just enjoy your current set up and take trips to areas you think you might be interested in. South Texas? Gulf Coast? Arizona? New Mexico? Carolinas? If another area really seems like home you'll know it. Then you can make more specific plans. Life has a way of leading you along - as long as you keep your eyes open and your brain turned on. Does the shed and RV meet local zoning??? Will it in 14 years???
Nice to plan ahead but a lot of things could change by the time you get there. Save up some cash and make the final decision in 14 years.

I think your plan is very do-able and agree with everyone - keep saving. Having two places sounds like a great idea.
14 years is a long way off to have real concrete plans. Keep saving.

You already have the property up north, why not simply buy a piece of property down south someplace and Build a small house on each? Or equip it with power water sewer and pull a trailer both ways. But that to me seems kind of a waste of an RV. Small house in one place and a park model in the other?

WOW! Thanks for all the great responses! Just talked to the financial advisor last night (at our house, yeah). Outside of needing heavy duty health care (long term health care plan in force) we will be going somewhere. It's hard not to plan for retirement when you pay so much attention to the financing of it!
The trailer up north will someday be a park model mini mobile home cabin. I mean these things are very cabinish! We're in a gated resort we've loved for the last 30 years. Instead of going on a cruise we've been going up there. I don't think zoning will be a problem. 800 people would be quite upset and you don't want to put a basement in. WATER TABLE! Ouch.
I've just been finding anything I look at in the southern United States is super expensive. If this is true our (plan) will most certainly change.
