They just had this hands-free law take affect here in WA as well I believe. Not sure how it works in other states but in WA amateur radio operators are exempt from this law if I understand correctly.

So, we should wait until we get a perfect law to enact any laws? We would still be arguing over the Bill of Rights, then.

I'm thinking this law is better than no law.

That's the great thing about California.
Where else can you:

1. Have laws to legislate literally everything, thought out or not.
2. Contend with traffic problems second to none.
3. Have a chance of earthquakes, mudslides or wildfires second to none.
4. Pay $1,000,000 for a house that would sell for $200,000 in most
other states.

So why is it that California is such a great place to live?.....

I have my problems with what goes on in California, but I'm still here.

1. Got to agree with this one.
2. Have you ever been to Chicago, New York City or any other large city? They have as bad or worse traffic.
3. The largest known earthquake was a lot closer to Tennessee than to California. And we normally (except for a few weeks ago) don't have tornadoes or hurricanes.
4. You also have to compare the income. And the weather.

1. Glad you agree
2. Been to all of them, MANY times. LA still takes the cake.
3. A single quake, maybe. Way too many in CA. Wildfires & mudslides
too. Waaaay too unpredictable.
4. So everybody in CA makes 4 - 5 TIMES what the rest of us do, in
like professions? I doubt it.

I'm stayin' right here. (I know you're glad about that!)

No, in fact you ever get out this way, let me know. Always glad to compare notes with those from other parts of the country.

Been there many, many times --- over a month at a time on several occasions. I drew my own conclusions. That's why you won't ever see me reside in CA. Different strokes for different folks. It's all good.

So mentioning a good law about cellphones use turned into California bashing.
Shall I say "only on RV.net forum"?

There I would disagree. The law does not attack the fundamental problem, which is talking on the phone while driving (and more general terms, "driving while distracted"). I see the law as a band-aide such that the lawmakers can point to it and say, "See, we are doing something about this major problem...", without actually doing anything productive about it.

It is like the "carbon credits" that people are buying. They really make no difference, but let people feel good about actually doing something about the climate.

What they should have done is make it simply illegal to talk on the phone while driving (hands free or not). It is the "hands free" bit that is wrong because "hands" are not the problem. It is the "brain free" driving that is the problem.

My view on the granola state is it would be a great place to live if 30 out of the 33 million people who live there would simply go away. It does have great climate, resources, etc., but there are just too dang many people there for me.

Not to mention the fact that if you sold the beautiful home where you now live and re-bought in CA, imagine the crackerbox you'd have to live in! And, don't forget the wildfires, earthquakes, mudslides, smog, ----and 33 million people!

Yeh, I like the law too. But will CHP stop them? Seeing the speeding and agressive driving on the I-15 and 215 corridor from Temucula to Riverside that never gets stopped, I'd say the chance rachet jawing on the phone won't even make a blip on the CHP screen. There must be an awfully lot of important people out there on the road, that have to be on the phone all the time. I wish all drivers had a chance to flag traffic in a work zone and see all the brain dead drivers approaching you. Always wear your track shoes!

Do you monitor that entire stretch of freeway everyday so that you can know for a fact those drivers never get stopped?

No, that would have been worse. I'm tired of being told I can't do something that I'm perfectly capable of doing simply because "you" cannot. And you can't legislate intelligence. Some things just can't be fixed with more laws.

I'd just as soon let them continue. More than enough people know better.
