We will leave Bozeman on 7/5/08 heading to Glacier National Park. We plan to follow route 2 through Montana to Michigan and then south to Delaware. Please advise campgrounds and interesting places along route 2. Thanks, LCP
When you get to Michigan, there are 4 MI State Parks along or close to Route 2. Crystal Falls, Wells, Fayette & Straits. Go to this website

At Escanaba, MI the fair grounds have a great Campground for under $25 a night. There are several places along Lake Michigan for big rigs to pull over to go down along the water. You might want to take a side trip to the Soo locks. Being from out of State I don't recommend the MI State parks the camping and extra fees will be more tham any private campground and most MI State Parks only have electric. You'll want to spend at least one day at the MAC to see the fort and go out to the island. There are a couple of campgrounds on both sides of the bridge.
Really nothing of interest (IMO) after you leave Glacier until you get to Michigan. Of course you'll have miles and miles of miles and miles. Other posters have given you some good MI ideas. You could also grab a look at "Da Yoopers Tourist Trap" near Negaunee.

If you can stop and see the Porcupine Mountains in MI upper peninsula...it might be a little out of the way but worth the stop. Also someone mentioned Fayette, a very worth while stop. It is an old iron smelting site that is run by the state park system. The last time we were there we were able to talk to the archeologist's that were doing work there. We really enjoy stopping there.

Let's see.....
In Glacier NP...
Going to the Sun/Garden Wall highway is a real treat, especially going west to east
Take the road from the Apgar Campground area (West Glacier) to the North Fork Flathead River. You can see what a forest fire does to an area. Drive north along the river and visit several pristine lakes (Bowman & Kintla). Lots of hiking trails.
The drive to Two Medicine lakes on the east side of GNP is interesting. On the way you can visit the "disappearing falls" (Running Eagle Falls). Check out the lobby in the Hotel at East Glacier. Those were some big trees in the "old days". On the east side of East Glacier is the (now) BNSF RR bridge that spans the Two Medicine River. There is also a tall RR bridge (Cut Bank Creek) on the west side of Cut Bank, MT.
In Browning don't miss the Plains Indian Museum. Lots of interesting history there. Then it gets a wee bit boring - wheat fields and sage brush, and grain elevators along the railroad. There are county museums in some of the towns (Chester has a nice park to stop for lunch), but haven't checked them out 'cause I was raised on the "Hy-Line" and saw all that stuff years ago.
Havre has the "underground" and the H. Earle Clack Museum. Plus there is a RV park in town on the RR side of Hiway 2. Not sure what else is there since I left many years ago.
Southeast of Glasgow, MT is the Fort Peck Dam. A large earthen dam. There are two COE campgrounds. One is on the north west side (mostly drive-through sites E/W) of the dam (a mile or so ) and the other (back-in sites only E/W with a dump) is on the east side below the dam.
On the way to Williston, ND, Culbertson has a nice wayside rest on the east side of town. Also visit The Ft. Union Trading post on the Missouri River. The four lane highway 2 starts at the Mt/ND border and is mostly 4 lane across ND. Past Williston the town of Ray, ND has a city campground on the west side of town (turn south at the small sign). There are no formal sites but there are some 30 amp outlets. The last time through there was a donation box. Hope you like trains cause they blow their horns for a nearly RR crossing. There is a small lake nearby.
we've never stopped at Minot except for gas. There are some shopping centers. Rugby, ND is the North American center of the continent. There are state campgrounds around Devils Lake. Full most of the time we've been through. There is a county campground (Larimore Dam) about 25 miles west of Grand Forks (turn south). Nice level sites (big field)with 30/50amp, water/sewer.
There is a Cabela's across the Red River in East Grand Forks, MN. Never visited it. Further east in Minnesota is the beginning of the Mississippi River. It is a state park (Lake Itasca) and is about 25+ miles south of Highway 2. There are some national forest campgrounds further east between Cass Lake and Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids has a Forest History Center which is interesting.
In Duluth there is Canal Park (bring money There are eateries, an older lakes freighter, the lift bridge over the ship canal (fun watching a 1000' ship going through). There are several campgrounds in Duluth - Indian Point (they have a web site. Located off hiway 23 south off I-35)) and Spirit Mountain (have to go south on I-35 several miles. Same turn off for the Thompson Hill Rest area-good views). Spirit Mt. is heavily wooded. Indian Point is on the St. Louis River and there is a walking trail along the river.
Highway 2 is our usual route when we go west to visit relatives. this is because it is fairly flat and the roads are good. And since we cruise along at 55-60mph we can make decent time and still be relaxed. In fact we are leaving next week for this years journey to Washington and Oregon. Hope I didn't make this post too long.

Just off 2 and Rt. 45 near Watersmeet Michigan is Bond Falls - the flowage. It's a pretty little stop, nice hike down a path (some stairs) along side a waterfall. Real pretty. FYI, not ADA accessible, at all, if that's a concern...
When we travel west, we always use Hwy. 2 as the road is good, traffic light and lots of the small towns have inexpensive community c.g. for very cheap rates or free. Stop in Minot - the geographic centre of N.A.
Michigan has lots of lovely beaches along the shore of Lake Michigan. A great c.g. that is not advertised is at Bergland - $10 a night, on Lake Gobebic, electricity and dump station (go to the lower area). Also a decent looking restaurant 2 blocks away.
Michigan S.P. are expensive if you are from out of state.
