We are leaving in a 2 weeks for Buena Vista Colorado from Texas. We will be going up to Raton New Mexico and up 25. Here is the real question. Witch is the better rout. 25 to Walsenburg and catch CO69 or go on up to Pueblo and take US 50 across to 285. There is only about 30 miles difference. So Witch is the better rout as far as road conditions an elevations to clime and scenery. Has any one of yal traveled to roads in the last 6 months to year.

Thanks
Rick

69 is a very nice, slow paced, scenic route but I wouldn't recommend it if you are wanting to make any time. It's off the beaten path, two lane country road.

A better route would be to go west from Walsenburg to Alamosa and then take 17 north over Poncha Pass, an easy pass to Salida and then on north to Buenie.

While going all the way to Pueblo might sound and look like a better route, I personally wouldn't use it. Hwy 50 from Canon City to Cotopaxi follows the Arkansas river, twisting and turning with some very blind curves.

If you take US 50 from Pueblo, consider taking CO 9 from just north of Canon City to where it joins US 24 near Hartsel, then follow 24 to BV. That's the route we usually take to/from visiting our kids in Texas. It's not as curvy or crowded as 50 is where it follows the Arkansas, but you would need to keep an eye out for deer.

69 is a long and slow drive... stay on 25 to Pueblo, then take 50 and then 9 and 24.

But interesting as you are between the Wet Mountains and the interstate.
We took it just because we had time and wanted a different way to come back from Walsenberg.

When we travel that way we often take Highway 69. Very little traffic. We enjoy that route.
