A week ago I was camped in a neat little campground alongside a beautiful meadow (see pic). After dinner I was sitting outside plunking on my mandolin. After a few songs I looked up and there were 3 deer about 75 yards away in the meadow looking at me. Their ears were pointed at me. For at least 10 minutes they hardly moved, always looking at me and never eating the grass. One did start to come my way, but turned back after a few yards. All at once they all "bounced" away at the same time. I say "bounced" because it looked like they were on pogo sticks.
It was a very moving experience. A tear came to my eye as they left. I'm assuming that since they stayed so long they enjoyed my music. I think I'll have to come up with an original composition called "Deer in the Meadow".

I have my Fathers Mandolin but can't play it. It is probably 100 years old and I used to enjoy when he played it when he was alive. I have new strings so maybe I will have to get it out and try again. Boy when you have nature so close to you and Guitar or Mandolin music, there is nothing better for a evening of relaxation. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

If I played my instrument in the woods, I would probably kill the deer's ears so they couldn't hear a mandolin anymore!
I play the drums...
But seriously, that's great you were able to get that experience! It sounds almost movie like.

The deer where we're staying are so used to people they walk right up to you. I was working on the truck and almost bumped into a deer that was watching me. A young buck sleeps under one of our slides in the shade on a warm afternoon. A doe walks right up to get fed - loves crackers and potato chips from your hand. They seem very docile, but are still wild animals, so we keep our distances. Now the bear and skunk are another story - and aren't warmly welcomed. We know when the mountain lion is around because there are no deer.

Oh, I don't know--back when I was single, I used to pluck my Mandolin in motels all the time and ever once in a while the dears paid attention to me! Most bounded away tho.
