The bears are usually around at Hyder until about the 10th-15th of September. In case you're near other bear viewing areas, here are all the best areas and the peak dates - Bear Viewing in Alaska.

We are currently in Hyder and there are very few fish thus very few Bears. The Rangers keep saying that the fish are late and that they should be here at any time.

We are currently in Stewart and watched a grizzly last night catch one of the few salmon that are running. What a thrill. The views on the Cassiar are so worth the trip. We thought that the highway was in great condition with just a couple of construction areas. Keep in mind that the crews don't work on Sundays and there is no mud on a sunny day. We planned accordingly and had no problems. It has been the highlight of my trip to Alaska and I am glad we didn't let all of the horror stories scare us out of coming down the Cassiar.

We are also at Hyder..saw a 2 year old male Griz that is probably one of the three cubs we saw 2 yuears ago...very few salmon and you have to be patient but by Mid August the fish should be in...all runs are late this year. The Cassiar is in the best shape I have ever seen it . We just drove southbound and except for the first 20KM it is fine. Some gravel and frost heaves but hey thats the North eh?

We just left Stewart yesterday. Few salmon in the creek at Hyder, and only saw one bear, a young brown bear. Several eagles hanging around. The drive up to the summit viewpoint was tremendous, and actually smoother. than I thought it would be.The Saturn handled it easily. We'll have to come back another year for more bear viewing, not too far from home...
